由香港政府于1989年创立，昔日的公开进修学院，现已发展为一所具活力、全面的综合型大学，以教育、研究和服务社会为三大核心范畴。
都大是香港唯一获自行评审学历资格的自资大学。因此，我们能够独立设计、批核和评审我们自己的课程和学科，而无需外部审核。这项独特性让我们成为香港最灵活的大学，使我们能够紧贴市场脉搏及行业需求培育专业人才，也为我们在2024年3月获香港特别行政区政府（特区政府）批准成为本港首间应用科学大学（应科大）奠定了坚实的基础。
我们在2024年底获得特区政府7,700万港元的资助，以设立「放射诊断学荣誉理学士」及「机器人和自动化工程荣誉应用理学士」两个新课程，旨在培育相关人才，以纾缓香港业界内人手短缺的情况。这也是都大作为一所应科大发挥其角色作用的最新例证。
作为本港首间应科大及「粤港澳应用科学大学联盟」创始成员， 大学正深化与大湾区内志同道合的院校及机构联系，发挥协同效应，推动区内职业专才教育。与此同时，我们亦积极推动与欧洲的相关院校建立联盟。
都大的另外一个优势是我们提供的学术范围广泛，涵盖心理学、创意艺术、音乐、幼儿教育、语言、护理学、物理治疗、医疗化验科学、资讯科技、检测和认证、工程和机器人技术，以及各类商业学科。
在2025-2026学年，都大的全日制面授课程学生人数超过17,000人，当中包括超过3,000名攻读硕士或博士学位的学生。以全日制本科生人数计算，都大在本港众多大学中排名第五。
另外，研究资助局「本地自资学位界别竞逐研究资助计划」中，大学亦表现出色，连续三年在获批项目数量及资助金额上均高踞全港自资院校之首。 在2025／26年度，都大获批金额更占15所参与院校的整体资助金额逾37%。
2025年，都大已新增约10项专利及与英国公司签订首项技术授权协议，推动非侵入性前列腺癌筛查技术。
同年，都大「天使基金」资助了首批五间由都大学生、教职员和校友创立的初创公司。
至于全球认可方面，都大在国际高等教育机构Quacquarelli Symonds（「QS」）公布的大学排名显著上升。在「QS亚洲大学排名」中，由2024年的第701至750位，跃升至2026年第393位；在2026年更首次跻身于全球约1,500间上榜大学内，位列第781至790位。在香港九所上榜的大学中，都大在「就业结果」指标排名第六，「学术声誉」指标排名第七。
配合大学各方面的发展，我们获得特区政府拨出13亿1,748万港元免息贷款，这是我们为建设「社区健康枢纽」项目融资计划的关键部分。新大楼工程预计于2025年底启动。
另外，我们新购入都大中心（MU Tower），并租用爱民广场二楼一个面积约34,000平方尺的地方，为大学长远持续发展及联系社区提供一个优质空间。我们亦将密切关注「北部都会区大学城」（北都大学城）的发展，把握这个重要机遇，以充分利用其地处的空间资源及毗邻深圳工商产业集群的地理优势。
与此同时，都大学生宿舍「MU88」正进行全面改装工程，预计于2026年9月新学年重新开放，届时将提供439个住宿名额，并配备全新设施及更优质的服务。

大学制订《2024-2028策略发展计划》，主题为「提升高水平 开拓新领域」，涵盖六大策略重点和54项承诺，包括扩阔学术课程范畴；提升学生支援；建立优秀教研团队，促进教学、研究和知识转移的工作；以及深化国际参与、伙伴关系和协作等，确保大学长远持续发展。
作为本港唯一一所具自我评审资历的自资大学，都大一直紧贴市场脉搏及行业需求，灵活开办优质的专业课程。学生人数为自资院校之冠。
政府致力透过「职学联通、多元发展」的策略，推广职业专才教育，为学生提供多元化的学习和就业机会，培育更多掌握应用技能的专才，此目标与都大办学理念不谋而合。大学于2024年初向教育局申请，并成功获批为本港首间应用科学大学（应科大），致力开办结合理论和实践的应用课程，培育应用能力和知识兼备的人才贡献社会，同时提升职业专才教育地位。
大学积极与不同行业加强联系，开办更多应用学位课程。我们已与香港国际航空学院合办学位课程培训民航机师，是成为应科大以来与业界首项重点合作，而其他合作项目亦将陆续有来。
作为应用科学大学联盟创始成员，我们期待更多大学加入，透过联盟工作，与政府一同加强公众对应科大及应用学位课程的认识，推动应科大在本港的发展，为青年提供更多元的升学及就业途径，于不同领域展现才华，真正实现「行行出状元」。
近年大学各方面飞跃发展，配合教研所需，筹建新校舍发展计划刻不容缓。大学计划于何文田现有校园附近兴建新校舍大楼，发展项目定位为「社区健康枢纽」，包含社区友善、长者友善和环保元素，配备不同类型的教学设施，以及公众活动空间，促进社区联系及互动。新大楼预计于2028年落成启用。
2024年12月，大学在红磡购入一幢饱览维多利亚港景色的甲级写字楼大厦。该幢物业总建筑面积约为280,000平方呎，设有155个泊车位，命名为「MU Tower」，提供优质空间以配合大学长远及持续发展。

香港都会大学校长
林群声教授
林群声教授为香港都会大学校长及环境化学讲座教授。
林教授于1979至1984年就读于香港大学，取得学士及硕士学位；并于1984年获英联邦奖学金赴英国深造，在谢菲尔德大学修读博士学位。及后林教授在裘槎基金会资助下，于伦敦大学国王学院从事博士后研究，并于1988年加入香港城市理工学院担任讲师一职。其后，他在多所大学工作，包括香港中文大学 (1990-1992) 和澳洲维多利亚科技大学 (1992-1994)。他在1994年再次回到香港城市大学化学系 (前生物及化学系) 工作。
林教授是香港高等教育界的先驱，在学术发展及大学行政管理方面具丰富经验。加入都大前，林教授为香港城市大学特别项目总监，并身兼胡梁子慧教授 (理学) 及化学系讲座教授。自1994年起，他在城大先后担任其他要职，包括署理副校长 (本科教育)、副校长 (学生事务)、秘书长及海洋污染国家重点实验室主任。
身为环境化学、生态毒理学，以及环境风险评估领域的杰出学者及专家，林教授的学术成就超卓，他在生态学和环境评估的研究成果尤其突出，提升了公众的保护环境意识。他亦开发了一系列新兴污染物的超灵敏检测分析方法；其中，针对关键环境基质中的新兴污染物的痕量分析技术，为协调国际的分析方法作出贡献。其关于新兴污染物的全球分布与环境持久性的研究成果，也影响了世界上很多地方的相关政策与立法。
林教授在国际学术期刊以作者或共同作者的身份发表超过500篇文章，主持超过35项环境相关的政府顾问项目，包括有毒污染物对本港鲸豚和水鸟的风险评估。他先后于2011年、2012年及2019年三度获国家教育部颁发自然科学奖 (二等奖)。
参与公共事务方面，林教授现时担任香港考试及评核局主席、教育统筹委员会当然委员、北部都会区咨询委员会委员、创新科技及工业局「杰出创科学人计划」成员、土地共享先导计划─顾问小组成员及司法人员薪俸及服务条件常务委员会委员。他曾任环境咨询委员会主席 (2010-2016)，并分别于 2008 年及 2014 年获香港特别行政区政府颁授太平绅士及银紫荆星章。
