Hong Kong's first-ever Chinese bomb disposal expert Jimmy Yuen, a graduate in Law Enforcement and Security Management, was – before his retirement – the first Chinese head of the Police Force's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau. With composure and laser-sharp focus, he has led numerous successful operations, keeping Hong Kong safe by defusing literally explosive situations.

A world of creativity derived from flickers, melodies and words

Assistant Professor of the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Angela Law teaches Creative Writing and Film Arts programme with diverse and inspirational approaches, enlightening her students and expanding their creative spaces and scope of knowledge, which have earned her glowing praise from them. Angela is here to share how she gets along with her students over the years.

President of Chinese Academy of Sciences Prof. Bai Chunli kicked off the 'Seminar Series for the 40th Anniversary of the Reform and Opening Up of the Country' with a lecture held on 8 November, offering insights on how China’s science and technology undertakings have benefited from the Reform and Opening-Up policy in the past 40 years, during which the Academy has evolved and contributed to the development of the country. The second one of the seminar series was delivered by Prof. Cai Jiangnan on 20 December. He spoke on 'The Challenges and Innovations Faced by the Deepening of Medical Reform', guiding the audience through China’s innovative health policy practices and international health care system reform.

At the invitation of the School of Arts and Social Sciences and Tin Ka Ping Centre of Chinese Culture, famous writer Prof. Pai Hsien-yung gave a seminar on 'Kunqu Opera on the World Stage: The Peony Pavilion – Young Lovers' Edition Travels to the West' on 30 November, sharing his views and experiences on the inheritance of Kunqu, promotion of Kungu to the Western countries and reproduction of the famous opera 'Peony Pavilion' by applying a modern twist to the classic piece. Co-organized by the OUHK, MingPao Monthly, Hong Kong Writers and Macau Chinese Culture and Art Association, the 'Literature Criticism and Life — Lectures on Chinese Literature in the Cross-Strait Four Regions 2018' was held on 8 December. Scholars and experts from around the world gathered together and exchanged views and knowledge on the relationship between literature, literature criticism and life.

Famous entrepreneur Dr Allan Zeman presented a lecture for the Great Speakers Series on 22 November, sharing his entrepreneurial and business management philosophy, as well as exploring the development opportunities and challenges of Hong Kong and its neighboring regions.

Another lecture under the Great Speakers Series was given by Prof. Thomas Chan Man-hung on 18 December. He introduced to the audience the major changes that the Belt and Road Initiative would bring about, and explored the advantages and opportunities of Hong Kong under this new development strategy.
