Lectures will be scheduled on weekday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.

SCI 8010SEF is a course designed by the School of Science and Technology for the Postgraduate programme.

Aims

This course aims to enhance students' understanding of a systemic thinking approach about scientific research theoretically and methodologically.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  1. Principles to scientific research
  2. Qualitative and quantitative approaches
  3. Information collection and databases
  4. Research gap and hypothesis
  5. Experimental design and sampling
  6. Data collection methods
  7. Statistical analysis and data interpretation
  8. Report writing and presentation
  9. Research ethics and integrity
  10. Scientific seminars (scientific presentations provided by external and internal academics and professionals)

Assessment

Course assessment will include two individual assignments (40%) and a mini-project (60%). The mini-project consists of an oral presentation (20%) and a written report (40%). It will be conducted in group project mode with individual assessment. Students with different academic backgrounds will be assigned to a group to promote academic sharing and exchange.

Students are required to submit their assignments and project via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
