The three-day (19–21 March) Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) Career Fair 2024 was kicked off today, with over 130 participating enterprises and organisations from more than 25 industries, including business, professional services, technology, healthcare and social services, offering over 5,000 local, Greater Bay Area, and overseas job and internship opportunities to HKMU students.
The number of participating companies increased by 40% year on year, reflecting stronger demand for human resources among employers in general and their recognition of the capability of HKMU students. The participating companies include industry leaders from various sectors, such as Airport Authority Hong Kong, Ernst & Young Group, The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, and for the first time, the well-known mainland e-commerce platform Pinduoduo.
At the event, HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing expressed his gratitude to all the companies supporting the fair and emphasised that HKMU has always collaborated closely with different industries to provide professional degree programmes that address their manpower needs. The University had submitted an application to the Education Bureau earlier to become a University of Applied Sciences, aiming to nurture outstanding talents for various industries.
He said, “Universities of Applied Sciences train students so that they can directly enter relevant professions upon graduation, while companies can also contribute to the design of programme curricula that cater for their needs and enhance the professional skills of their employees.”
HKMU was the first self-financing institution in Hong Kong to participate in the Government's “STEM Internship Scheme”, and President Lam stated that 34 of the University's programmes have been included in the scheme and that nearly 2,400 students were expected to benefit and receive subsidies to undertake internships at local innovation and technology companies, thus greatly aiding their future careers in the related professions.
Under the theme “Me&U: Together, We Empower Your Career”, this year's career fair has for the first time arranged designated recruitment days for different focus industries, including “Business and Professional Services”, “Engineering and Technology” and “Government and Social Services”. The fair also features recruitment seminars and workshops, career counselling and professional portrait-taking services, providing comprehensive assistance to students to equip them for their ideal jobs.
