The School of Arts and Social Sciences (A&SS) of Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), in collaboration with the Kowloon City District Office and the Kowloon City District Youth Development and Civic Education Committee, designed a brand new “National Security Board Game”. The game will be distributed to primary schools in Kowloon City District in September this year to help students to learn more about national security. The board game is a key initiative under the “Kowloon City District National Security Education Community Promotion Programme”. A kick-off ceremony was held recently (6 April) at HKMU's Jockey Club Campus to mark the launch of the promotional campaign.

The kick-off ceremony was officiated by Deputy Secretary for Justice the Hon Cheung Kwok-kwan, Member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and Chairman of the House Committee of the Legislative Council the Hon Starry Lee Wai-king, District Officer (Kowloon City) Ms Alice Choi Man-kwan, Chairman of the Kowloon City District Youth Development and Civic Education Committee Mr Yeung Man-yui, and HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Cheung Kwok-kwan, Deputy Secretary for Justice, stated that national security education is the cornerstone for safeguarding national security and for ensuring Hong Kong's long-term stability and prosperity, and that the HKSAR Government has been actively promoting national security education on various fronts. He commended this project for introducing national security knowledge to students through a lively and interesting approach, helping students deepen their understanding of national security through gameplay.

HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing reiterated the University's commitment to social responsibility, education on national security, and community engagement. He said, “We are collaborating with the Government and community partners to impart knowledge about national security to young people through an innovative and entertaining approach. We hope that this will help build awareness of national security among the younger generation, thus contributing positively to Hong Kong’s long-term stability and development.”

The themed board game, designed by HKMU's A&SS, is expected to be distributed free of charge to primary schools in Kowloon City in September. At the kick-off ceremony, the officiating guests and participating students experienced a life-size version of the “National Security Board Game”. The game board covers 20 key areas of national security. Players take turns rolling dice to move forward, and when they land on different squares on the board, the hosts introduce the represented national security domain, presenting national security knowledge to students in a lively and interesting manner, thus stimulating their interest and awareness of related issues.

In addition to the board game, a series of diversified activities, including sharing and seminars on national education, will be rolled out throughout the year under the “Kowloon City District National Security Education Community Promotion Programme”, to further enhance understanding and awareness of national security among the public, particularly young people, in the district.
