Student Affairs Office Community Engagement Service-Learning Best Wishes to the Elderly: Life Education Programme

“This programme made me reflect that we should not shy away from death. In fact, Death is nothing to fear, and we should pre-plan for it” (Nick CHONG)

“Through this activity, I have a deeper understanding of the Advance Care Planning. As a nursing student, I hope to apply this knowledge in the workplace to help more patients and their families.” (Helen HUNG)

SAO organized the Best Wishes to the Elderly: Life Education Programme which aims to allow student volunteers to learn life planning and think positively about life and death through a series of life education experience activities, such as visiting funeral home and talks at funeral services social enterprise.

Moreover, they promoted life education to 8 singleton elderly people, as well as assisted them to prepare for critical illness arrangements and fulfilling their small wishes. Their small wishes included: going to the park that an old lady often went to with her deceased husband before, riding the Hong Kong Observation Wheel, watching a biographical movie of a deceased idol, Anita Mui, etc.

The service targets were deeply moved by this “dream action” and the programme not only caused students to reflect on their lives but also enhanced their academic knowledge and skills.
