A team of Computer Science students — Yip On-tik, Chui Tsz-ching, Lee Chak-yin and Eugene Wu Long-fung — received multiple awards for their innovative project, “Smart Glasses for Hearing Impaired in Hong Kong” in local and national innovative and technology competitions.

In the 20th Cross-Strait and Hong Kong-Macao College Student Computer Innovation Competition (CSHM-CCIC), organised by the Computer Education Research Association of Chinese Universities, the team received the First Prize, the Best Application Award, and the Outstanding Display Award in the Undergraduate category. Remarkably, they were the only team from Hong Kong to win a First Prize in the Undergraduate category and the only team from Hong Kong to secure three awards among 1,668 entries from 27 provinces and cities.

In addition, they achieved Second Place in the Tertiary Students category at the Tech Singularity 2025 – Smart City AI Contest organised by Hong Kong Information Technology Joint Council.

The team designed Smart Subtitle Glasses (SSG), a device aimed at improving accessibility and communication for individuals with hearing impairments. Unlike conventional assistive technologies, SSG integrates real-time speech-to-text transcription (STT) and multilingual translation capabilities into an augmented reality (AR) wearable device. Powered by cutting-edge pre-trained models (PTMs), the system features two key modules — a speech recognition module and a translation module — that deliver exceptional accuracy and minimal latency for real-time transcription and translation.

Established in 2006, the CSHM-CCIC has provided an annual platform for university students to showcase their technological creativity. In 2024, the competition was recognised as a four-star event, ranking fourth among 28 national computer-related contests.

The Smart City AI Contest encourages the submission of innovative solutions in areas such as databases, cloud technology, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, to promote the development of Hong Kong's technological environment.
