Honouring nine distinguished personages

Every year HKMU recognises the achievements of individuals who share the University's values of dedication and devotion in serving the community by the conferment of honorary awards. The Honorary University Fellowship Presentation Ceremony and Honorary Degrees Ceremony for this academic year took place on 4 November and 5 December 2022 respectively.

Honorary University Fellows

Ir Dr Alex Chan Siu-kun, SBS

Dr Chan, Managing Director of Applied Technology Integration Limited, has led many pioneering infrastructural projects locally, on the mainland and internationally. During his tenure as Chairman of the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications, he saw through the development of the mechanism underpinning the implementation of the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework.

Mr Eugene Liu

As Managing Partner of RSM Hong Kong, Mr Liu is a pivotal figure in the field of public accounting, and has a special concern for talent development in the profession. In 2015, he partnered with HKMU to develop an internship programme that has provided training for 180 students up to the present.

Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak, BBS, MH, JP

Dr Shi, President of the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong, is known for his entrepreneurial spirit as the founder of the leading printing and packaging enterprise Brilliant Group. He is also the former President of the Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council Foundation (HKYIC), in which capacity he made generous donations to local universities. The HKYIC has co-launched a number of career support initiatives with HKMU.

Mrs Maria Sung Law Man-kwan

Mrs Sung has risen above adversities to become the founder of Holy Café Training Centre, a social enterprise that provides job opportunities and training for people with disabilities. Her vision has attracted donations and support from individuals and organisations, enabling her team to offer help to the elderly, low-income families, single parents, and the chronically ill.

Honorary Doctors

Mr Chan Ka-kui, GBS, JP
(Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa)

Mr Chan is a Registered Professional Surveyor and a distinguished leader in the construction industry. He oversaw many groundbreaking initiatives as former Chairman of the Construction Industry Council. He was also instrumental in setting up the Hong Kong Institute of Construction in 2018, with which HKMU signed a memorandum of intent in December 2021 to provide academic advancement opportunities for construction workers.

Dr Charles Chen Yidan
(Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa)

Dr Chen, a world-renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist, is co-founder and Advisor Emeritus of Tencent Holdings Ltd. In 2007, he established the Tencent Charity Foundation, empowering Internet users to get involved in charity work through the Tencent Charity platform. In 2013, he set up his own Chen Yidan Foundation and in 2016, he founded the world's best-endowed education prize in Hong Kong, the Yidan Prize.

Ms Katie Shu Sui-pui
(Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa)

Ms Shu is the founder and owner of Regal Fortune Limited. She is also a distinguished alumna of HKMU, and has donated generously to her alma mater over the years. In 2012, she set up the Katie Shu Sui Pui Charitable Trust, which, in 2021, donated HK$20 million to the University to establish the Katie Shu Sui Pui Endowment Fund.

Prof. Joseph Ting Sun-pao, BBS
(Doctor of Letters, honoris causa)

As a well-known historian of Chinese and Hong Kong history, Prof. Ting was central to the planning and implementation of the new Hong Kong Museum of History, the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence and the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum. At HKMU, he is a School Advisor of LiPACE, at which he supported the setting up of a Professional Diploma in Community Museum Management.

Mr Peter Wan Kam-to, MH
(Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa)

Mr Wan is a respected certified public accountant in Hong Kong and mainland China, and was a partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers before his retirement. As a Council member of HKMU from 2009 to 2014 and Treasurer from 2014 to 2022, he contributed tremendously to the introduction of the University’s Quality Enhancement Measures Scheme in 2017.
