Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) has launched a brand-new career readiness programme, called the “HKMU Dream Builder Scheme”, to enhance students' job seeking and employability skills and their soft skills in the workplace and to encourage them to actively explore their personal career paths in the future.
HKMU has been actively strengthening its ties with different industries for various types of internship opportunities. In the 2023/24 academic year, close to 60%, or more than 7,000 students, are participating in internships, an increase of 13% year on year.
Ir Dr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung, HKMU Council Chairman, announced the launch of the Scheme in today's HKMU Industry Engagement Day cum Employers' Luncheon. In his speech, he expressed his sincere gratitude to HKMU's industry partners, who have consistently supported the University and the career development of HKMU students, and said he hoped more partners would participate in the Scheme.
Ir Dr Wong said, “As Hong Kong's first University of Applied Sciences, HKMU is dedicated to integrating practical skills with academic excellence. We focus on applied learning, ensuring our students have hands-on experience and industry insights to help them prepare for challenges in their future careers.”
He said that the University will cooperate and enhance ties with leading companies and has launched the “HKMU Dream Builder Scheme” to focus on developing essential skills for the students in terms of communication and problem-solving, equipping them with a solid foundation for their professional journeys.
Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, HKMU President, said that the University will cooperate with industries via channels, such as the HKMU Career Development Advisory Committee, to provide students with more internship opportunities, keep them abreast of the needs of industry, and prepare them for career planning as early as possible.
The new career-readiness programme will be launched in the 2025 Spring semester, with a quota of about 20 in the first phase. Shortlisted students will receive intensive career training organised by the University, including personality and career assessments, extensive professional training, career sharing, one-on-one career coaching and opportunities to interact with HKMU management. The Scheme will also strengthen the students' soft skills for the workplace through training in communication, problem-solving, personal branding, presentation techniques, work ethics and business etiquette. The aim of the programme is to help students understand their strengths, interests and career aspirations while providing them with support in finding summer internship positions to allow them to gain practical job-seeking experience. Students who successfully complete the programme and internship will receive a “Career Development Award” of HK$5,000 to encourage them to explore their career paths and prepare to contribute to society after graduation.
