Academic programmes

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) is elegantly positioned to respond swiftly to changes in society’s talent needs and to launch academic programmes quickly and proactively. Our academic programmes focus on a number of strategic areas pertinent to the development of the metropolis. We have embarked on academic reforms to restructure the curriculum and assessment system.

We will further strengthen our programmes to captivate the aspirations of university students today. At the same time, it is also important for us to regularly review and enhance the curriculum and the accompanying university experience.

With tremendous growth in the technology-driven economy both locally and in the rest of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), expectations for continuous academic and professional development have risen. To meet the demand for lifelong learning, we will devote extra efforts to academic development for postgraduate programmes.

Commitments

We are committed to:

1

refreshing the curriculum and progressively enhancing the student learning experience;

2

promoting professional, career-centric programmes as the focus of academic development;

3

strengthening our flagship programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and

4

enriching our portfolio of postgraduate programmes.

Teaching and learning

We strive to offer an excellent university journey to equip students with the qualities they will need in their future endeavours. We will adopt innovative pedagogies to enhance the student learning experience, and to prepare students to face the challenges ahead in the fast-changing world when they graduate from the University.

We will forge stronger links with industry. In addition to seeking their input in the academic programme development process, we will incubate selected programmes, in collaboration with our industry partners, to ensure that our curriculum caters for the needs of the community. We hope to introduce work-integrated learning to cater for students’ career development needs and society’s talent needs. We also wish to blend service learning and internships into our curricular activities.

As part of the University’s academic reforms, we introduced learning modules on our core values. These modules are part of the University’s common core to be taken by every undergraduate student. In time, we hope to strengthen the coverage of these core values across the curriculum.

Creating a unique university experience

A key strategic direction in supporting student learning is to actualise the totality of learning, which involves implementing a systemic approach to equally emphasise co-curricular and extra-curricular learning, as well as conventional classroom learning. At the same time, we pay special attention to students' whole person development, all-round exposure, and future skills.

HKMU's teaching and learning pedagogy takes advantage of our students' high level of readiness for technology. Agile-blended Learning is a pedagogical approach developed especially for metropolises. Capitalising on advancements in information and communications technology and strong higher-education demand, the University tailors educational delivery and student interfaces to suit the need for effective learning in our advanced metropolis. This is characterised by flexibility, technology mediation, learner autonomy and collaboration.

We have launched a university core module focusing on entrepreneurship mindset. In time, we will further embed the entrepreneurial spirit and elements of global perspectives in the curriculum to enrich the student learning experience.

Commitments

We are committed to:

9

developing and implementing agile-blended learning as a core pedagogy in the HKMU curriculum;

10

nurturing our students' global perspectives, entrepreneurship mindset and soft skills; and

11

strengthening our students' language proficiency.
