The Positioning of HKMU

Over the past three decades, HKMU has established itself as a major provider of university education to cater for the aspirations of secondary school leavers. At the same time, the University provides opportunities for working adults to upgrade their academic qualifications at both the first degree and postgraduate levels.

During the first decade after its launch in 1989, the former Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong gradually evolved into an influential provider of university education through a system of open learning. In its second decade, the then Open University of Hong Kong offered first- and senior-year undergraduate places to young people in the relevant age group. In conjunction with this development, the physical infrastructure, learning and teaching facilities, and student services were enhanced and enriched to benefit both part-time learners and full-time students.

Today, Hong Kong Metropolitan University has matured into a sustainable, modern, comprehensive university. We focus on the delivery of academic programmes in areas pertinent to the development of the metropolis.

We live in an era of constraints amid the declining birth rate over the past few decades and the consequent reduction in the school leaver population.

Universities must continue to improve despite diminishing resources resulting from the declining student intake. HKMU is fully prepared to face the challenges ahead.

Covid-19

The world has changed considerably in a few years amid the challenges posed by Covid-19 and then by the unsettled situation in Europe. The pandemic has changed the economy, the way many businesses operate, and the way we connect and interact, and has resulted in new business models, greater-than-ever reliance on technology, etc.

As a university, we have adapted to the new way of life, the new model of academic programme delivery and the accompanying university experience. In the new era, we will be more vigilant in updating our programmes and curriculum as well as our teaching and learning pedagogies, and tailoring student support in response to the changes in industry, the professions and career models.
