The School of Science and Technology aims to impart modern scientific knowledge and develop information technology skills to help our students play leading roles later in such fields as computing, communications, health care, occupational safety and environmental sustainability. With fully-furnished laboratories on campus, students are able to develop practical ‘hands-on’ skills; and they also participate in field trips and site visits in actual operational environments. The School offers more than 50 programmes which lead to sub-degree, degree and postgraduate qualifications in various disciplines within the broad areas of science and technology.
The School organized and hosted a Testing and Certification Industry Summit in March 2011. This event, which was attended by more than 200 practitioners, provided an update on developments within the industry, the challenges facing professionals in this field, the outlook in the Pearl River Delta, and the significance of these developments for Hong Kong’s industrial and economic development. The many opportunities for Hong Kong, and the ability of local testing organizations to undertake product testing, were also discussed.
Having provided nursing education for more than 16 years, the OUHK has produced over 2,000 nursing graduates. Building on this strong foundation, the School launched two full-time, face-to-face nursing programmes: the Higher Diploma in Nursing Studies (General Health Care) and the Higher Diploma in Nursing Studies (Mental Health Care). A collaboration agreement was also signed with Yan Chai Hospital to offer students on the Higher Diploma in Nursing Studies (General Health Care) monthly financial support, a practicum venue and tutors, with the possibility of being employed by the hospital on completing the programme.
In March 2011, a cooperation agreement was signed with Caritas Francis Hsu College (CFHC) to offer jointly a full-time top-up Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Web Technologies programme to CFHC higher diploma graduates in computing studies. The programme, which provides students with knowledge and techniques for developing web-based information systems and other similar systems, is also open to applicants with equivalent academic qualifications.
In view of the success of the School’s English-language Postgraduate Certificate in Environmental Leadership and Decision Making, the School introduced a new online Chinese version of the programme in October 2010, making it the world’s first Chinese taught programme on environmental management. In August 2010, the School organized an environmental protection seminar together with the Society of Business Management of Macau, which promoted the improvements environmental protection can make to the quality of life.
