As we pursue excellence in every aspect of our teaching programmes, we continue to achieve outstanding success in learning and teaching. Our students and staff were recognized by receiving various awards during the year. Their achievements give us a strong cause for celebration as their success highlights our success. At the same time, we also acknowledge exceptional contributions to the community through our honorary awards.
The first short film, Lost in the City’s Toilet, produced by Creative Writing and Film Arts students, was shortlisted in the Fresh Wave 2010 – International Short Film Festival organized by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. The film was shown at the Broadway Cinematheque in September 2010. Ricky Leung, a Year 2 student, directed the production, leading a team of over ten other students. The script was written by Venus Cheng, also a Year 2 student, and was adapted from a short story in the book Mock City by the former Programme Leader Mr Ben Wong.
Two OUHK teams, consisting of Year 3 students Wong Chun-cheung, Lau Wai-ho and Yiu Fat-chuen from the full-time Computer Engineering programme, as well as Year 2 students Wong Lai-shan, Lai Fung-ping and Jason Wu Wing-yiu from the full-time programme in Computing, won second prizes in the Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modelling. The contest, which was organized by the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, involved university teams in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Australia and mainland China.
Wong Lai-shan, a full-time Computing student in Year 2, received the Annual Hong Kong Association of University Women Undergraduate Scholarship 2010–11 in recognition of her outstanding academic performance and community service.
Shieu Tsz-wang, a full-time Social Sciences Year 3 student, received the first prize in the undergraduate division of the Impression of Taiwan Essay Competition. The event was organized by the Hai-Hwa Foundation of Chung Hwa Travel Service and the China Airlines Hong Kong.
Full-time Year 2 Computing student Jason Wu Wing-yiu won the Gold Award in the Job Attachment Scheme for mentees in the Police Mentorship Programme. He was chosen from over 100 students from ten local tertiary institutions.
A team of six members from the Student Speech and Debate Society took part in the 36th Hong Kong Youth Speech Contest in December 2010. Hung Sen-hei won a merit award at the event, while Tam Ching-yi entered the final eight.
The Dragon Boat team won the championship in the open division of the 12km Seahop Dragon 2010 Dragon Boat Rally, as well as the Sa Sa 2010 Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races. The year has been extremely fruitful for the team, who won at least four championships, two first runner-up places and one second runner-up place in international and open competitions in Hong Kong, Xiamen, Shanghai and Macau.
Percy Law Ka-yee, a BSc (Hons) in Occupation Safety and Health (Middlesex) student, was the first runner-up in the Student Project Competition 2010 organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers-Safety Specialist Committee.
Graduates of the fourth intake of Professional Certificate in Wedding Planning Management gained high marks in the professional examination of the Association of Bridal Consultants. Athena Cheung Kwok-man was the first person in Hong Kong to have received an honours standing, achieving a final grade of over 90%. Also, graduates of the Professional Diploma in Personal Financial Planning programme launched in Macau received excellent results in the Certified Financial Planner (CFPCM) examination. Student Yip Kit-han passed all four examination papers in one go.
At the annual Honorary University Fellowship Presentation Ceremony in November 2010, four distinguished people were honoured for their contributions to the community and the OUHK. They were Mr Chan Siu-fung, the well-known Cantonese opera singer; Ms Sophia Kao Ching-chi, SBS, JP, Chairperson of the Women’s Commission; Ms Quince Chong Wai-yan, Cathay Pacific’s Director of Corporate Affairs and Dr Wan Tai-min, Chairman of Anglo-American Traders Ltd, who has been elected twice to the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and has been honoured with the World Outstanding Chinese Award.
At our 19th Congregation in December 2010, honorary doctorates were conferred on leaders in their fields of expertise. Ms Ann Hui On-wah, one of Hong Kong’s foremost film-makers and winner of numerous local and international film awards, received a degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa. Mr Paul Chow Man-yiu, the former Chief Executive of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, received a degree of Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa. They were joined by prominent businessmen Mr Thomas Kwok Ping-kwong and Mr Vincent Woo Wing-fai, who both received a degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa. Mr Kwok is Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited, as well as Executive Vice President of the Real Estate Developers Association of Hong Kong. Mr Woo is a veteran of the real estate community and Managing Director of Wing Sheung (Holdings) Limited.
