Final Year Project

科技學院 電子與電腦工程 Final Year Project

Final Year Project

Year 4 students have to do a final year project. The project aims to provide an opportunity for students to integrate their knowledge gained from the study of the programme to work independently on a research and development project. The course aims to build confidence in the students to organize their strategies, plan their schedule, and methodically tackle scientific, technical, business or social problems encountered in practical and professional life.Students are required to explore an area in electronic and computer engineering in considerable depth, and to demonstrate problem solving and analytical skills. The topic areas include computer simulation, biomedical engineering, mobile app development, artificial intelligence, software development, Internet of Things, embedded systems, and scientific research.

1. Biomedical Engineering

We have projects about Biomedical Engineering technologies. Nowadays there are many professional machines are made for improving human health, but most of them are too expensive. In the projects, we will use emerging biomedical engineering technology as innovation to build a medical device or system. Incase to provide a low cost and high efficient medical care services to users. In the past, we have projects about posture monitoring system for the prevention of neck pain and back pain, ECG Acquisition and Analysis System, portable eye tracking system for human-computer interfaces, multifunctional pillbox, posture monitoring system prevention of spine curvature disorder, health-monitoring toothbrush and intelligent shoes system for weight and physical activity monitoring.

2. Intelligent Gaming

Nowadays, computer games are being common as the meanwhile artificial intelligence is the new topic. In the past few years, AI competition is mainly focus on the game like chess, but there have some new type of competition is mainly focusing on computer game in these few years, for example StarCraft, Simulated Car Racing and fighting game AI competition is the latest competition because it was organized since 2013. We encourage students to participate in these AI competitions and have some related project about it. Includes design an intelligent strategy for playing Angry Birds, Fighting Game, and StarCraft. Both of these topics require complicated calculations and programming skills.

3. NFC technology

We have projects includes NFC technology. Near-Field communication (NFC) is a form of short-range wireless connection. It allows two or more devices located within a centimeter to build up untouched point-to-point data transmission. It can produce either an electric field, or a magnetic field, but not an electromagnetic field. Nowadays, mobile phones are using electric-field NFC for special transactions. In this project student needs to develop a popular and user friendly data transmission mobile app for NFC equipped mobile phones. It is considered that most mobile apps require NFC enable, but they are no data transmission function. So allow easy file sharing between NFC equipped mobile phone could be efficient and innovative.

4. Mobile Application

Mobile applications are the most popular high-tech products in the world. Since the advance of science and technology, mobile applications are capable to do more and more things in the future. We encourage students to try emerging technology on mobile phone, incase to build innovative mobile applications. For example, Smart Shopping Mall Guide, Real-Time Bus Location Monitoring System, Android Surveillance System, Mobile Surveillance System, Design and development of networking software for pet lovers, Converting Public Sector Information into Usable Location, Mobile Device Security Assessment by Investigating Network Traffic, Improving Municipal Services with Mobile Apps and Web Technologies. Both require complex programming skills and calculations.

5. Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that imagines all objects around us can connect to the Internet, as a part of it. It is widely coverage and including various kinds of devices such as digital cameras, smart phones, wireless sensors, etc. While all these devices are interconnected with each other, more and more services and processes grows up to support our basic needs, medical care, environment and economies. Numbers of devices connected to the Internet can give us different kinds of services. At the same time, data and information are growing slightly when services increased. Based on these, we have projects about using different resources of IoT to build a monitor system to improve our daily life. For example, use CCTV and wireless sensor network to collect real time data, incase to solve college canteen waiting problem and electric power wasting problem.

6. Network simulation

Complex networks exist all around in our daily life, such as World Wide Web, international airline network, social network. Sometimes, network would have problems and make it out of function. Therefore, questions appear. Incase to prevent the network from or deal with a bad situation, we need a system to measure and define the performance of the network. In final year project, we suggest students use Netlogo software to achieve this. In Netlogo, students can write a program to simulate the network with causing failure and attack, then minimize the risk and influence of cascading effect.

Jonathan Chiu
Marketing Director
3DP Technology Limited

Jonathan handles all external affairs include business development, patents write up and public relations. He is frequently interviewed by media and is considered a pioneer in 3D printing products.

Krutz Cheuk
Biomedical Engineer
Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital

After graduating from OUHK, Krutz obtained an M.Sc. in Engineering Management from CityU. He is now completing his second master degree, M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering, at CUHK. Krutz has a wide range of working experience. He has been with Siemens, VTech, and PCCW.

Hugo Leung
Software and Hardware Engineer
Innovation Team Company Limited

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
