In the modern society nowadays, several populations are still living in non-electricity places. Most of them locates in low developed or high-in-debt countries. They are hard to access the electricity. Teens Angel Family Centre (TAFC), an NGO in Hong Kong, observed this situation during their service trips. So, TAFC would like to develop a renewable energy system to help improve the situation. However…

To improve the performance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in predicting the result of physical actions, many AI researchers use Angry Birds as a platform to improve their algorithm. The latest Angry Birds agent is still not good enough compared to human players since they still have design flaws in their algorithm. Some AI researchers use the method of machine learning on their Angry Birds agent but there are not enough challenging game levels for the agent to play. The aim of this project is to design deceptive Angry Birds levels for agents to improve using machine learning. In this project, …

This project creates a simulator for RISC-V V extension. RISC-V is an emerging Instruction Set Architecture for microcontrollers, accelerators, and processors. The V extension adds vector-based SIMD capabilities to RISC-V. SIMD capabilities accelerates a wide array of task like media processing, graphics processing, scientific calculation and machine learning, therefore the adoption of the V extension is critical for RISC-V's adoption as personal computer processor and as fixed circuit accelerators. RISC-V has seen widespread interest as an alternative to …

In this project I develop a new smart monitoring, it can monitor everything that happens in the house 24 hours to protect the safety of children by using automatic detection system. An automatic detection system will keep checking the activities of children and alert the parent when the children have danger. It also uses image processing technology to identify different situations, such as identifying homeowners and family members through face recognition and will issue alarm when there have any unknown people…

In the modern era, nearly every single family or even some students have a personal computer belonging to them, some of us even got more than one computer with them. People relied their daily life on the computer under their hands. But on the other side, with the limitless and non- regulative development of the internet, it posed a serious danger to the general public.

Wireless content caching is a technology that prefetching popular contents and placing them at the wireless edge facilities, such as base-stations, cloud server etc. Given that the users requested contents are cached by the network, they don't have to access the remote server. From this point of view, proactive caching is able to reduce the transmission delay and improve users' experience. Since a large number of contents exist in prevalent systems and the cache capacity of Base Stations is limited, caching decision becomes a vital aspect …

After graduating from OUHK, Krutz obtained an M.Sc. in Engineering Management from CityU. He is now completing his second master degree, M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering, at CUHK. Krutz has a wide range of working experience. He has been with Siemens, VTech, and PCCW.

Hugo Leung
Software and Hardware Engineer
Innovation Team Company Limited

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
