NextGen Climate Changemakers Programme(Day 3) -Urban Climate Injustice: First-Hand Encounters

23 Oct 2025 | 13:30 - 18:30

On the third day, students engaged in immersive field visits to gain deepen understanding and foster empathy around urban climate vulnerability through direct observations to identify systemic issues of climate injustice.
Students were divided into two groups:

Group A: Street Cleaner Appreciation Walk (Hong Kong): Students joined a guided walk to observe and appreciate the critical role street cleaners play in maintaining urban environments. The group gained first-hand insights into the physical and environmental challenges faced by these essential workers, particularly in the context of rising temperatures and extreme weather events. This walk fostered a deeper appreciation for their contributions and highlighted the need for better support systems for these frontline workers.

Group B: Subdivided Flat Simulation and Homeless Visit with Interview: This group participated in a simulation of living conditions in subdivided flats, a common housing arrangement for low-income families. The experience shed light on the vulnerabilities faced by residents, including poor ventilation and encounters due to extreme weather. Following the simulation, students visited homeless individuals and conducted interviews to understand their lived experiences, challenges, and coping mechanisms in the face of urban climate risks.
