HKMU Angel Fund incubates first batch of five startups with up to HK$1 million each; driving innovation, technology and sustainability

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) allocated HK$50 million last year to launch the HKMU Startup Fund, supporting innovation and entrepreneurship among students, faculty and alumni. As part of this initiative, the Angel Fund Programme selected its first batch of five high-potential startups, each receiving investment of up to HK$1 million to further develop their business. These startups span fields such as smart healthcare, artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics and sustainable development, leveraging innovative technologies and products to drive social and economic growth in Hong Kong and beyond....

With the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) results announcement approaching, the 48 Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) programmes offered by Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) this year continue to be popular among students, with enthusiastic application responses. Over the past three years, the number of applicants selecting HKMU programmes as their top three choices (Band A) after results day has consistently increased. As of the latest round of programme choice modifications this year, Band A applications surged by 22.5% compared to those in the same period last year, highlighting the growing recognition and popularity of the University's professional and practical programmes among both students and educators....

HKMU and SoCO study highlights the impact of subdivided units on children's mental health and academic performance
40% of children in subdivided units report a lack of space for study and play, leading to higher levels of depression and anxiety

Hong Kong's housing shortage and sky-high property prices have forced many grassroots families to live in cramped, poorly equipped subdivided units. To examine the impact of these living conditions on children's development, the Public and Social Policy Research Centre of the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) partnered with the Society for Community Organization (SoCO) to conduct a longitudinal study. The findings from the first phase reveal that the narrow, overcrowded and noisy environment of subdivided units significantly affects children's mental well-being, academic performance and daily life. The survey found that nearly 40% of children living in subdivided units feel they lack adequate space for studying, and over 40% feel they lack space for play. These children also display significantly higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress....

HKMU co-develops high-performance, Chinese-specific AI-powered predictive models for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data to analyse extensive medical records and lifestyle factors is shaping the future of smart healthcare. Leveraging healthcare data from Hong Kong and various regions of mainland China, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) has collaborated with researchers from multiple institutions to develop AI-enhanced predictive models. These models aim to assess the risks of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (CCVDs) in the general population, as well as in patients with specific diseases, such as diabetes mellitus and cancers. “Lost and Found in Hong Kong” exhibition now open at HKMU
Valuable historical documents reveal Chinese officers' participation in the Normandy landings

The touring exhibition “Lost and Found in Hong Kong: The Unsung Chinese Heroes at D-Day” is now on display at the Ho Sik Yee Library of Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU). Showcasing a collection of rare historical materials, the exhibition unveils the little-known history of Chinese naval officers' participation in the Normandy landings (D-Day) during World War II (WWII). The exhibition is co-organised by the “D-Day in Hong Kong” initiative of the Urban Studies Institute (USI), HKMU Library, and the Department of Social Sciences, HKMU School of Arts and Social Sciences. The exhibition will run from now until 31 July 2025. Admission is free with prior registration....
