Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) held its 35th Winter Congregation between 25 November and 5 December, conferring over 4,500 academic qualifications to fresh graduates.

Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, HKMU President, congratulated the graduates on completing their studies and entering a new stage in their lives, and hoped that they developed into better individuals through their university life and the practical knowledge they acquired. He encouraged them to contribute to the country and Hong Kong by applying their expertise and strengths, whether they choose to enter the workforce, pursue further studies, or establish their own business.

Prof. Lam said that HKMU will continue to strive for academic excellence, develop its physical campus, and improve its facilities to meet the needs of learning, teaching and research. To this end, the University is planning to build a new campus in Ho Man Tin, designed to serve as a Hub for Community Health and Wellness, to strengthen the University's connection and collaboration with the community. In addition, the University acquired and renovated a hotel this year, now known as MU88, to provide accommodation for non-local students and researchers, thus further enhancing the internationalisation of the University.

As HKMU celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, Prof. Lam mentioned that the overall performance in teaching and research has been encouraging. For example, the University secured HK$34.5 million in funding from the Competitive Research Funding Schemes for the Local Self-financing Degree Sector of the Research Grants Council (RGC), amounting to 40% of the total RGC allocation, once again ranking first among all self-financing institutions.

“As always, HKMU will focus on providing quality education to students, and work tirelessly and purposefully to make itself a university that all students and alumni will be proud of,” said Prof. Lam.

The four-day, 13-session Winter Congregation was held on 25 November, and 2, 3 and 5 December. Starting in 2023, the University has held the Congregations in both summer and winter so that all graduates can attend and invite their family and friends to witness their academic achievements.
