The School of Arts and Social Sciences of Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) recently hosted acclaimed science fiction author Mr Stanley Chen Qiufan as its “Artist-in-Residence” to foster students' creativity and explore the creative potential of artificial intelligence (AI). From February to March 2025, Mr Chen held ten public lectures and workshops designed to inspire creativity in science fiction writing and provide practical guidance.

During his residency, Mr Chen shared his writing journey and offered valuable insights into creative writing and its future in the AI era. He presented sessions such as “Imagineering: How does Machine reshape our creativity”, which examined AI's influence on creative writing, and “Worldbuilding: from mythology to metaverse”, which explored how humans have crafted parallel universes through diverse art forms, including literature, theatre, film, games and immersive experiences, unlocking boundless creative potential.

In several workshops, Mr Chen guided the students in creating high-quality science fiction narratives, enhancing their creative skills. He encouraged them to explore science fiction as an evolving art form and to discover themselves through creative expression in this ever-changing era.

The residency culminated in a forum discussing Mr Chen's latest book,《剎海》, which addresses pressing global issues such as climate change, showcasing science fiction's power as a tool for reflecting on reality.

Stanley Chen Qiufan, an award-winning science fiction author, scriptwriter, translator and curator, has been honoured with three Galaxy Awards for Chinese Science Fiction and 12 Xinyun (Nebula) Awards for Chinese Science Fiction. His short story “The Fish of Lijiang (麗江的魚兒們)” received the Best Short Form Award at the 2012 Science Fiction & Fantasy Translation Awards. He previously worked at tech giants Google and Baidu, and he co-authored “AI 2041” with renowned AI expert Mr Lee Kai-fu.

The Artist-in-Residence programme aims to enhance students' industry knowledge, as well as their theoretical and technical skills. The programme has hosted a diverse array of artists, including Mr Anthony Chen Zheyi, a Singaporean film director; Mr Ip Wai-ching, a local illustrator; Mr Dung Kai-cheung and Ms Erica Li Man, writers; and Mr Tommy Li Wing-chuen, a brand consultant and graphic designer.
