Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) held a National Security Education Day flag-raising ceremony on its campus this morning. Representatives from the Chinese People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison (the Garrison) were invited to the University to provide guidance to the HKMU Student Flag-guard Team on flag-raising techniques and foot drills. HKMU Pro-Chancellor Dr Eddy Fong Ching, President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, together with Court members, University management, staff and students, attended the ceremony to witness the solemn flag-raising moment.

Prof. Lam said that it was a great honour to host representatives from the Garrison for in-person instruction, enabling the Student Flag-guard Team to learn from their rigorous professionalism. He stated, “National security is the cornerstone of social prosperity and stability. Through this meaningful and educational ceremony, we aim to remind our staff and students of the importance of jointly safeguarding national security and to nurture youth with a strong sense of national identity and social responsibility, contributing to the future development of Hong Kong and the country.”

Members of the HKMU Student Flag-guard Team underwent intensive training for the ceremony. Under the professional demonstration and careful guidance of the Garrison, the participants said that they had benefited greatly from the experience. One team member, Wong Lok-yiu, said that it was a great honour to receive coaching from the Garrison and that this experience improved their flag-raising techniques and deepened the team's understanding of the solemn responsibility and patriotic spirit embodied in the flag-raising ceremony.

HKMU has long attached great importance to patriotic education to foster students' sense of national identity. The University raises the national flag on campus daily and holds flag-raising ceremonies every Monday morning and on various important occasions, including New Year's Day, HKSAR Establishment Day and National Day, encouraging active participation from students and staff.
