Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) will continue to adopt flexible admissions arrangements in the 2023/24 academic year and expand this to programmes under the Non-means-tested Subsidy Scheme for Self-financing Undergraduate Studies in Hong Kong (NMTSS). Special consideration for admission will be given to students who attain excellent overall results in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) but perform below par in one core subject.
Except for the Bachelor of Education with Honours in Early Childhood Education and programmes offered by the School of Nursing and Health Studies, the arrangements will apply to all candidates who wish to apply for 2023/24 HKMU undergraduate programmes under both the Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP) and the NMTSS via the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS).
Under the arrangements, JUPAS applicants who fail to achieve Level 3 in either Chinese or English may still be considered by HKMU, provided that they attain a score of not lower than Level 2 in the subject in which they underperformed and achieve Level 5* or above in one other Category A subject. The candidates' total HKDSE score must still meet the minimum expected admission score of their preferred programme, and they must place the programme in their Band A choice in JUPAS and pass an interview.
HKMU Provost Prof. Reggie Kwan Ching-ping said, “In the past three years, students had to study under the impact of the pandemic, and their performance may have slipped during this difficult and challenging period. By expanding the arrangements, students can still have a chance to enrol in their preferred programme and achieve their development goals.”
HKMU has set up various scholarships to recognise the outstanding academic performance of HKDSE candidates and talented new students. The Star Scholarship scheme introduced last year was well received by students and will be continued this year. Students who attain 5* or 5** in any category A subject in the HKDSE and are admitted to an HKMU degree programme through the JUPAS scheme will be awarded a HK$40,000 scholarship for each subject. HKMU also offers a variety of prestigious entrance scholarships for other JUPAS applicants and outstanding athletes. Each scholarship recipient will receive up to HK$120,000.
