Minor in Global Studies

Offered to full-time undergraduate students* across all disciplines and majors, this minor programme lets you integrate your outbound exchange experience as part of your degree. By joining a term-long exchange programme, you will gain opportunities to new academic and social experiences that will enrich both your personal growth and your resume.

To fulfill the requirements for declaring this minor, you will be required to complete at least a 15-credit-unit equivalent course load at the host university during your exchange. Your study plan must be approved by your respective School before you start your exchange.

* Only students enrolled in programmes under the 3 credit-unit systems are eligible to declare a minor programme; while students admitted to the BBA (Hons) in Global Business programme should apply for exchange via the course IB 3093BEF Overseas Exchange.

If you are enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours in Global Business (BBAHGBJ), you have the opportunity to participate in a term-long exchange during your third year under the course IB 3093BEF Overseas Exchange.

To fulfil the requirements for this course, you will be required to complete at least a 15-credit-unit equivalent course load at the host university during your exchange. Your study plan needs the approval of the Programme Team before you start your exchange.

BBA (Hons) in Global Business

Eligibility

To apply for study exchange; you are generally required to fulfil the below requirements:

  • Be a full-time undergraduate student at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU);
  • Have completed at least one year of study* under your current major at HKMU;
  • Have attained a cumulative GPA (CGPA) of 2.3 or above in the academic year preceding the exchange term;
  • Fulfil any additional admission requirements set out by the partner institution, such as English or other language requirements; and
  • Ready to be an ambassador of HKMU

* For students enrolled in BBA (Hons) in Global Business, you must be in Year 3 to apply.

 

Important notes:

  • Applicants are advised to review the partner institution's fact sheet thoroughly before applying. This ensures awareness of any specific requirements or conditions related to the exchange programme at the host university.
  • Exchange quotas might be limited and are determined by agreements between HKMU and partner institutions. This quota system emphasises the importance of timely application and acceptance confirmation.
  • Year 3 students will be given higher placement priority.
  • Final year students who are already enrolling in the last semester in the current academic year is NOT eligible to apply.

Minor in Global Studies
1.

Do your Research

  • Attend Study Abroad Info Session to learn about exchange opportunities and application procedures.
  • Review list of destinations and partner institutions here. (Coming Soon)
2.

Submit Application

  • Complete and submit online application to indicate interest to enrol in Minor in Global Studies and preferences in exchange destinations.
3.

Initial Matching & Accepting Offer

  • Receive initial matching result via HKMU email.
  • Decide whether to accept the exchange offer following the instructions in the notification email.
  • Upon acceptance of the exchange offer, HKMU will formally nominate you to the host institution.
4.

Application to Host Institution

  • Submit admission application to the host institution following their instructions.
  • Consult coordinator of your respective Schools and Course Leader of GLS 3000BEF International Exchange to develop a study plan for your exchange term and for the period when you resume studies at HKMU.

  • Applicants are strongly advised to plan thoroughly before applying to the exchange programme to avoid withdrawal after acceptance.
  • Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Nominations are made through a holistic review of factors, including students' academic performance and language-proficiency, that demonstrate fit with the host university's offerings.
  • While students are welcome to indicate their destination preferences and may choose whether to accept an exchange offer, the final allocation of places remains at the discretion of HKMU, and a specific destination cannot be guaranteed.
  • Upon acceptance of an exchange offer, a student is deemed a nominee and will be formally nominated by HKMU to the host institution.
  • Applicants are advised not to contact the host institution until the nomination process is complete and official notification to submit the admission application has been received.
  • Requests to withdraw after accepting the exchange offer—due to reasons such as financial considerations or other circumstances not considered extenuating—may be treated as course withdrawals and could carry financial obligations. Please note that such requests will be considered individually on a case-to-case basis.
  • The final decision of admission rests solely with the assigned host institution.
