In response to the Education Bureau's advocacy of promoting mental health awareness among students, the University launches a University-wide student mental health enhancement scheme starting from the 2024/25 academic year. One of the core components is to implement a mandatory 12-hour “Mental Health First Aid” (MHFA) course, accredited by The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong (MHAHK), for all year one face-to-face undergraduate students starting from the 2024/25 academic year. The aim of the course is to equip students with the knowledge to identify early symptoms of mental disease and proactively seek help before their mental health situation deteriorates.

FAQ

Course Eligibility
Only year one face-to-face undergraduate students in the 2025/26 academic year are mandated to take the course. Having said that, SAO will organize MHFA courses for students in other study years irregularly throughout the academic year, normally every two months. If students are interested in the course, they are advised to stay updated with SAO's promotion.
This mandatory course targets all year one face-to-face undergraduate students in the 2025/26 academic year. Hence, students who change their study major as a year one student are required to fulfil this course requirement. However, if you have taken the NURS1050NEF/NCF or NURS N155F/CF in the 2024/25 academic year, you are not required to take the course again.
Course Enrolment
The course is housed under the School of Nursing and Health Sciences (N&HS). The details are as follows.

The medium of instruction will be available in Cantonese or English, while the language of learning materials will be in Traditional Chinese or English, respectively. Students can enrol in the course according to their own preference.
The course will be offered in all three terms. Please enrol in the course according to your own timetable and study load. You may note that the class quota will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
For the course enrolment schedule, please visit the Course Enrolment Webpage of the Registry (click here).
A number of classes will be offered in 2026 Spring Term and 2026 Summer Term for students' enrolment according to their own schedule. Nevertheless, the course enrolment will be on a first-come-first-served basis. As this is a mandatory course for year one face-to-face undergraduate students, you are strongly advised to complete the course at the earliest to avoid a last-minute rush.
You may submit “Application for Add/Drop” to Registry during Add/Drop Period. You may refer to the User Guide which provides step-by-step procedures of completing the application form. Late applications will NOT be processed. Kindly be reminded to complete the MHFA course within your first year of study.
Please refer to FAQ on Course Enrolment and the Instruction Kit for accessing Course Enrolment functions, which address common questions from students about course enrolment. For enquiries, please contact UG Enrolment Team of Registry by email (regftae@hkmu.edu.hk) or telephone at 2768 6704.
You can find the course you have enrolled in by reviewing the “Academic Record” and “Class Schedule” on MyHKMU after the add/drop period.
Please make sure the records are accurate. Any discrepancies should be reported to the UG Enrolment Team of Registry by email (regftae@hkmu.edu.hk) or telephone at 2768 6704.
As it is a mandatory course requirement, no course exemption will be granted to students who have obtained the MHFA certificate outside the University. Most importantly, the course content of MHFA course has already been updated in mid-2025.
If the enrolment number of the section is below 15, the section will be canceled. An email will be sent to affected students for information.
Attendance and Absence
For this course, student class attendance will be marked in paper form for record. Full attendance is required to complete the course, students will be considered absent from class if they are late for more than 15 minutes.
Please notify SAO with your full name, student ID number, enrolled “Course Code” & “Course Session” (i.e., L01) and medium of instruction via student email to saoce@hkmu.edu.hk by two working days.
In your email, you need to specify the compelling reasons for your absence and provide documentary evidence, such as a valid medical certificate. Please note that the SAO has full discretion in arranging make-up class on a case-by-case basis, and its decision is final.
If students are absent from class without SAO approval, they will be required to retake the whole course in the following academic terms.
If this situation arises or is noted during the Add/Drop Period, you may submit an “Application for Add/Drop” to the Registry for dropping the subject.
This course, consisting of 4 sessions, must be completed in sequence.
If you miss one of the sessions and receive approval from SAO for a make-up class arrangement, you will be arranged to join another section for make-up class from the missed session, and are not required to attend the original class.
If you are absent from a session without a valid reason and fail to provide relevant documentation to apply for a make-up arrangement within two working days, you will be required to retake the entire subject.
If students fail the course, students will need to enrol in the course themselves during the course enrolment period in the following term. The Registry and SAO undertake no obligation to identify/enrol a substitute course for them. If students fail it in the 2026 Summer Term, students will be arranged to retake the course in August 2026 in general.
Course Completion
The course completion record will be displayed on your “Academic Record” in MyHKMU and Student Development Activity Records on the CELTICS e-Portfolio platform (which will be updated by term). However, please note that the course will not be displayed on your Official Transcript and does not carry any GPA.
The instructor will decide whether to issue a certificate based on whether the student has met the course requirements and their attitude and performance in class. Eligible students will receive an email from SAO for certificate collection in due course.
Students are generally required to collect their certificates at the designated location within one month after receiving the email notification. If a student encounters special circumstances and is unable to collect the certificate within the specified period, they should notify SAO via email in advance to explain the situation. SAO will handle the matter at its discretion. Generally, uncollected certificates will be destroyed after the collection period and will not be reissued.
