What is Hackathon?

Hackathon is a dynamic event where participants engage in rapid, collaborative problem-solving within a limited timeframe.

At HKMU, our Hackathon emphasises fostering creativity and innovation through a structured problem-solving process based on industry-provided problem statements, rather than focusing solely on technology. With engaging pre-hackathon activities, inspired company visits, and hands-on innovation training during the main event, participants will gain valuable skills and confidence to ignite their passion for innovation and embark on their entrepreneurial journey.

HKMU Hackathon 2026 Themes

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development serves as a collective blueprint for fostering peace and prosperityfor both people and the planet, both now and in the future.

HKMU’s Hackathon 2025 draws inspiration from this agenda, using it to establish the two themes for the competition.

Two HKMU industry partners – OneDegree Hong Kong ( “OneDegree” ) and Kai Shing Management Services Ltd. ( “Kai Shing” )

have been invited to present their real operational challenges and outline problem statements

within their respective industry themes, providing students the opportunity to address them.

Each student team must select a theme and develop an innovative solution to the associated problem statement.

The application of a Virtual Concierge in commercial and residential buildings

Challenge

Amid an industry-wide manpower shortage and an aging population, hiring sufficient staff to manage the high volume of customer inquiries and routine administrative tasks has become increasingly challenging. Consequently, this limits Kai Shing’s ability to focus on delivering personalised, value-added services that require a human touch and better address the evolving needs of the community.

Problem Statement

Please propose a next-generation virtual concierge or chatbot that enhances customer service by facilitating tasks such as booking, information access, emergency reporting, and intelligent recommendations, while simultaneously reducing staff workload, allowing them to focus on more value-added responsibilities. Additionally, please develop education and promotion strategies to ensure that tenants or residents warmly embrace the implementation of the virtual concierge.

Empowering Pet Owners: Innovate with App to Elevate Pet Health Awareness

Challenges

Pet owners often lack awareness of the importance of monitoring their pets’ health, leading to preventable health issues and increased veterinary costs. In addition, the pet insurance market is getting more competitive, making it difficult for OneDegree to effectively reach and engage potential customers. The challenge lies in creating a solution that not only raises awareness about pet health but also effectively promotes the “Pawbook” app (https://www.onedegree.hk/en-us/pawbook) as a valuable tool for pet owners, ultimately driving customer acquisition for pet insurance.

Problem Statement

Please develop an innovative solution that leverages the Pawbook app to educate pet owners on the significance of pet health management while simultaneously promoting pet insurance offerings. Moreover, propose strategies to engage pet owners through community-building initiatives, educational content, and interactive features within the app.
