Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) welcomes the appointment of Ir Dr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung as Chairman of the Council, succeeding Mr Michael Wong Yick-kam. The new appointment of Ir Dr Wong is for a term of three years, starting on 20 June 2022.

At the same time, Mr Henry Tong Sau-chai has been appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Council, and Mr Arnold Cheng Ka-kui has been appointed as Treasurer, succeeding Mr Peter Wan Kam-to, for the same period.

In addition, Ir Dr Alan Lam Hiu-fung, Mr Bosco Law Ching-kit and Mr Yu Chung-leung have been newly appointed as Council Members and Ms Catherine Mun Lee-ming has been re-appointed as a Member for three years. These appointments and re-appointment will also take effect from 20 June 2022.

Ir Dr Conrad Wong has served as Deputy Chairman of the Council since 2019. He is a seasoned leader in the construction industry and has wide experience and exposure in higher education, public service and the business sector. His impressive insights and leadership are widely respected.

Ir Dr Conrad Wong said he was honoured by the appointment. “I have witnessed the University’s transformation and advancement over the years. With concerted efforts by all past Council Chairmen, Presidents, Members of the Council and the HKMU community, the University has achieved its success today and laid a solid foundation for future growth. I will continue to uphold the HKMU mission and vision, joining hands with all stakeholders of the University to bring new ideas and impetus to its development, thereby making even greater contributions to higher education in Hong Kong,” he said.

Welcoming Ir Dr Wong and all appointed and re-appointed Members, HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing said, “With his rich managerial experience and strong leadership, Ir Dr Wong will surely bring new perspectives and insights to the discussions in the Council and the development of HKMU, thereby helping to ensure the sustainable growth of the University. I look forward to HKMU's further strategic development under the guidance of the Council, chaired by Ir Dr Wong.”

Prof. Lam also expressed his profound gratitude to the outgoing Council Chairman Mr Michael Wong for his significant contributions to the university development over the past years. Mr Michael Wong has been serving on the Council of the University since June 2008 and took up the chairmanship in June 2016. “Under the brilliant leadership of Mr Wong, HKMU has achieved a number of historical milestones in the key areas of teaching, administration and campus development, including the completion of the Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare campus in October 2020 and the retitling of the University from ‘The Open University of Hong Kong’ to ‘Hong Kong Metropolitan University’ in September 2021. The visionary direction of Mr Wong has contributed tremendously to the continued development of the University,” he said.

Besides, Prof. Lam sincerely thanked other outgoing Members, including Treasurer Mr Peter Wan, Dr Chow Pak-chin, and Mr Gary Yeung Man-yui, for their important and valued contributions.

Mr Peter Wan has been serving as a Council Member since August 2009, and was appointed as Treasurer in June 2014. Owing to his outstanding guidance, the University managed to maintain its solid financial position and sizable surplus despite myriad challenges, facilitating the University's rapid development. Mr Wan has contributed significantly to the sustainable progress of the University.
