The Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) Shenzhen Research Institute (HKMUSZRI) held its opening ceremony yesterday (16 March) at Shenzhen Virtual University Park (SZVUP), marking a significant milestone in HKMU's research development. This will further strengthen the University's integration with industry and academia in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and foster the commercialisation of research outcomes.
The ceremony was officiated by Mr Wu Junbin from the Shenzhen Liaison Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (LOCPG); Mr Cao Dahua from SZVUP; Dr Eddy Fong, HKMU Pro-Chancellor; Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, HKMU President; Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong, HKMU Vice President (Research and Institutional Advancement) and Director of the HKMUSZRI; and Prof. Alan Au Kai-ming, HKMU Vice President (Strategic Initiatives) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the HKMUSZRI. They were joined by other University's senior management to witness the official opening of the HKMUSZRI, including Prof. Reggie Kwan Ching-ping, HKMU Provost; and Prof. Charles Kwong Che-leung, HKMU Vice President (Administration and Corporate Development).
First Hong Kong self-financing tertiary institution in SZVUP
As Hong Kong's first self-financing tertiary institution to be admitted to SZVUP, the establishment of the HKMUSZRI aligns well with the national strategic initiatives, including the National 15th Five-Year Plan, which supports Hong Kong's development into an international innovation and technology hub and its deeper integration into the country's development.
Successfully registered as a public institution in December 2025, the HKMUSZRI is positioned to engage with relevant stakeholders in the Chinese Mainland, with the aim of securing support measures for conducting research projects and facilitating talent recruitment. It will strengthen its role as the University's research and development institution in the Chinese Mainland, enhance its capacity for the transformation and commercialisation of research outcomes, and contribute to regional development. The HKMUSZRI is actively applying for various funding schemes and has already secured its first grant, totalling approximately RMB 2 million, from the Science, Technology and Innovation Commission of Shenzhen Municipality.
Building an integrated platform for industry, academia and research to promote the commercialisation of research outcomes
In his speech, Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, HKMU President, stated, “To actively support the national strategy and deepen Hong Kong-Shenzhen collaboration in innovation and technology, HKMU established the HKMUSZRI to anchor itself in the GBA and drive high-quality development, enabling Hong Kong's academic research strengths to integrate deeply with Shenzhen's industrial innovation advantages.”
He emphasised that as a university of applied sciences, HKMU is dedicated to strengthening the ecosystem of innovation and industry from research and innovation to practical applications, nurturing talent with both professional expertise and practical skills for society.
Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong, HKMU Vice President (Research and Institutional Advancement) and Director of the HKMUSZRI, introduced HKMUSZRI's mission and vision during the ceremony. “The establishment of the HKMUSZRI marks a significant milestone in HKMU's development,” he said. “Building on our strengths in applied research, knowledge transfer and an innovation ecosystem, the HKMUSZRI will build an integrated platform for industry, academia and research.”
He added that the aim of the HKMUSZRI was to deepen university-industry collaboration between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, drive more research outcomes to be translated and implemented in Shenzhen and across the GBA, injecting new impetus into the region's innovation-driven development.
Focusing on four cutting-edge areas: 12 research projects launched
The HKMUSZRI's Phase I facilities comprise wet and dry laboratories covering approximately 500 square metres, which became gradually operational in June 2025, along with offices and meeting rooms to support researchers. To meet the current and future development needs of its academic and research teams, the HKMUSZRI is planning Phase II and Phase III projects, which are expected to provide an additional 800 square metres of laboratory space.
Aiming to actively conduct impactful research projects, the HKMUSZRI has so far launched 12 research projects in four cutting-edge areas, including the fields of biomedical sciences, environmental science and quantum technology:
- Biomedical and Life Science: Research focusing on personalised gerontechnology, cardiovascular diseases, maternal health, cancer biology and other biomedical research related to disease progression, aimed at improving the accuracy of disease detection and the efficiency of health management.
- Net Zero and Environmental Technologies: Research focusing on mangrove wetlands, and integrating big data and artificial intelligence to explore sustainable development pathways for ecological conservation and human health.
- Quantum Technology: Advancing the integration of quantum materials and engineering to develop interdisciplinary innovative solutions; and exploring the application of quantum machine learning in the medical field.
- Digital Fabrication and Art Tech: Equipped with advanced facilities such as 3D printers and robotic arms to advance the adaptation of art technology in the research and application of smart cities and digital humanities.
In the future, the HKMUSZRI will continue to strengthen its core functions of research innovation, outcome commercialisation and talent cultivation. It is dedicated to becoming a key scientific research platform capable of undertaking major national projects, ultimately developing into a research institute with professional excellence and distinctive characteristics, laying a solid foundation for HKMU's long-term growth in Shenzhen and the entire GBA.
