Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) held its Honorary Fellowship Presentation Ceremony today (5 November) to present Honorary University Fellowships upon three distinguished personalities. The recipients are renowned local philanthropist Mr Chan Cheuk-ming, famous pop singer and writer Dr Agnes Miling Chan, and hotel management expert Mr Michael Li Hon-shing. HKMU Pro-Chancellor Dr Charles Lee Yeh-kwong presided over the ceremony.
Addressing the ceremony, Council Chairman Mr Michael Wong Yick-kam commended the three Honorary Fellowship recipients for their accomplishments in their respective fields and contribution to the betterment of society.
Mr Wong also stated that it was the first Honorary University Fellowship Presentation Ceremony held under the new university title. “The new title connects us with the city and the future. It communicates a sense of energy, interaction, and flexibility. The letters ‘MU’ in the new logo picking up the idea of ‘me’ and ‘you’ is speaking how the University interacts with and contributes to the community. We truly believe that HKMU, as a self-financing institution, is unique in its ability to engage with and serve our wider society’s needs through applied and professional education, and research,” Mr Wong added.
HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing congratulated the three distinguished persons and expressed his gratitude to them for their support towards the University. He said, “The combination of passion, practical achievement and social good that we see in the life stories of the Honorary Fellows today is a combination that we aspire to as a university. They have engaged directly and collaboratively with pressing social, cultural and community needs throughout their careers. As a university, we want to encourage all our students to make this kind of engagement an integral part of their learning experience.” HKMU has been putting more focus ever on initiatives to get its students engaging with the wider world, embracing experiential learning, and expanding their cultural, social and business horizons. “Our goal is to nurture graduates who can balance the passion and ambition they bring to their careers with a mindful approach to personal and social wellbeing,” Prof. Lam remarked.

Mr Chan Cheuk-ming, also known as “Sham Shui Po Ming Gor (深水埗明哥)”, is a respected local philanthropist and the founder of social enterprise, Pei Ho Counterparts. He started collaborating with the Society for Community Organization to offer meal vouchers at an affordable price for the poor at his restaurant Pei Ho Barbeque Restaurant since 2008. He now gives out free meals to the homeless, the elderly, and the ethnic minorities every week. (learn more)
Dr Agnes Miling Chan is a renowned pop singer, a Doctor of Philosophy, a professor at Japanese universities and a novelist. She started her singing career when she was 14 years old and soon became a famous teenage idol in Hong Kong and Japan. Besides her singing career, Dr Chan has also been devoted to community services. She travelled throughout Asia, advocating women rights and children welfare as an ambassador for UNICEF. Dr Chan is an Honorary Advisor of the Li Ka Shing School of Professional and Continuing Education (LiPACE) of HKMU. (learn more)
Mr Michael Li Hon-shing has been the Executive Director of the Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners for over 25 years. As an expert in hotel management, Mr Li has been directly responsible for countless initiatives to raise the standards of Hong Kong’s hotel industry over the years. Mr Li is a staunch supporter of the HKMU's Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration and he plays an instrumental role in facilitating the management trainee programme for the School’s hospitality students.
