Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) has made its debut in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2026, achieving encouraging results, with six subjects ranked, including three in the world's top 150. This reflects the growing international recognition of HKMU's programme quality and academic achievements, marking HKMU as Hong Kong's first self-financing university and university of applied sciences (UAS) to be ranked in the QS subject rankings.
The six ranked subjects span a range of academic fields: Art & Design (ranked 101–150), Performing Arts (ranked 101–150), Hospitality & Leisure Management (ranked 101–150), Education (ranked 301–350), Business & Management Studies (ranked 551–600), and Computer Science & Information Systems (ranked 751–850). In addition, HKMU is ranked 451-500 in the broad subject area of Arts and Humanities.
Covering over 1,900 universities from around the world, the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 evaluated universities across 55 academic subjects under five broad subject areas. The rankings are based on performance indicators such as academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, the H-index (which measures both the productivity and impact of a scholar’s published work), and international research networks.
Welcoming the international recognition in multiple disciplines, HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing said, “The inclusion of six subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for the first time is an endorsement of the tireless efforts of our academic teams in advancing research and nurturing talent. Looking ahead, we will continue to uphold our educational mission, providing students with quality education and striving to cultivate outstanding talent with professional knowledge and skills. In addition, we will continue to strengthen our collaboration with industry and partner institutions in Hong Kong and beyond, contributing to the long-term development of Hong Kong and the nation.”
In June 2025, HKMU made its debut in the QS World University Rankings 2026, becoming Hong Kong's first self-financing university and university of applied sciences to be listed. Subsequently, the University rose to 393rd place in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026, announced in November 2025, placing it among Asia's top 400 universities. As Hong Kong's first UAS, HKMU remains committed to responding to market trends and industry needs, offering high-quality professional programmes, advancing applied research, and expanding industry and international collaboration. The University is also committed to attracting outstanding students from around the world to support Hong Kong's development as an international hub for post-secondary education and to nurture top-tier professionals for Hong Kong and beyond.
