Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) will launch two new programmes in the 2026/27 academic year: a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Diagnostic Radiography and a Bachelor of Applied Science with Honours in Robotics and Automation Engineering. The aim of these programmes is to nurture talent equipped with both professional expertise and technical skills. In addition, the University will introduce a new “Minor in Global Studies” to broaden students' international perspectives and enhance their global experience.
The “Minor in Global Studies” will be introduced early next year. Undergraduates enrolled in this minor will have an opportunity to study abroad for one semester at partner institutions in countries such as Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Finland and South Korea. This initiative will allow students to integrate their overseas exchange experience with their major studies, further enriching their international exposure and practical capabilities.
100 new Scholarship opportunities to broaden students' horizons
Prof. Alan Au Kai-ming, HKMU Vice President (Strategic Initiatives), stated that the University will establish 100 scholarship opportunities to encourage students with outstanding academic performance to participate in the minor programme. “HKMU is also ready to welcome exchange students from around the world, fostering campus internationalisation and cultural diversity, cultivating students' global perspectives and cross-cultural thinking, and promoting Hong Kong's development as an international education hub,” he said.
HKMU's educational reputation has received positive recognition in the global academic community. This year, HKMU made its debut in the QS World University Rankings 2026, released by international higher education organisation Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), ranking in the 781–790 range. This marks a first for Hong Kong's self-financing institutions and universities of applied sciences (UASs). At the same time, in the latest QS Asia University Rankings, HKMU is now ranked among Asia's top 400 universities, rising to 393rd in Asia, a significant leap of over 140 places compared to the previous year.
As the only self-financing institution in Hong Kong with self-accrediting status and positioned as a UAS, HKMU has consistently demonstrated its ability to adapt swiftly to meet the needs of society and industry. By offering a diverse range of programmes across various disciplines, HKMU is dedicated to nurturing professional talent. Its graduates are well-equipped with practical experience and problem-solving capabilities, providing them with a distinct competitive edge in the workplace.
Over 40% of JUPAS programmes funded by the SSSDP
For the 2026/27 academic year, HKMU will offer 49 JUPAS programmes, 21 of which – including 10 applied degree programmes – will be funded under the Government's Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP) for undergraduate programmes. These programmes will provide a total of 1,365 first-year, first-degree places. Including top-up degree places, the total number of subsidised places will reach 1,891, the highest level among self-financing institutions.
The Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc(Hons)) in Diagnostic Radiography programme, which will be launched in the upcoming academic year, is included in the SSSDP and qualifies for the additional subsidy for applied degree programmes, bringing the total annual subsidy to $89,620. The programme features a unique bachelor-master design (4+1 years), equipping students to become diagnostic radiographers and sonographers. Graduates of the bachelor's programme will be eligible to apply for registration as diagnostic radiographers, while those who complete the master's programme can apply as registered sonographers.
Another new programme is the Bachelor of Applied Science with Honours (BAS(Hons)) in Robotics and Automation Engineering, which focuses on hands-on applications and basic skills in robotics and automation engineering across various industries. Students will have opportunities for training and internships, including placements in the Guangdong- Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
For the 21 programmes funded under the SSSDP, the annual subsidy is $81,450 for laboratory-based programmes and $46,780 for non-laboratory-based programmes. Among these, 10 applied degree programmes are eligible for additional subsidies, with annual funding of $89,620 for laboratory-based programmes and $51,880 for non-laboratory-based programmes. Tuition fees for 10 of the subsidised first-year, first-degree programmes will be lower by amounts ranging from $7,520 to $36,610 than those of UGC-funded universities.
For other JUPAS programmes, students are also eligible for the Government's Non-means-tested Subsidy Scheme for Self-financing Undergraduate Studies (NMTSS). For the 2025/26 academic year, the scheme provides an annual subsidy of up to $35,120.
