The Alliance of Universities of Applied Sciences (the Alliance) organised its inaugural international symposium last week (26–28 February). As a founding member and the secretariat of the Alliance, Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) worked in close collaboration with the other member institutions of the Alliance and the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications to coordinate the event.

Themed “Academic–Industry–Government Collaboration in Advancing Vocational and Applied Education”, the event brought together government officials, academic leaders, industry practitioners, and international experts to explore how universities of applied sciences can foster cross-sector synergies to drive innovation and nurture talent.

The Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, delivered the welcoming remarks. Addressing the symposium, Dr Choi said, “the symposium serves as a vital platform to promote articulation between vocational and professional education and training (VPET) and traditional academic studies, foster closer integration of industry and education, and encourage collaboration across institutions and enterprises worldwide. It reflects the Government's firm commitment to building frameworks that elevate the status of VPET, ensuring clear and sustainable pathways for learners. Through academic-industry-government collaboration, we aspire to nurture a new generation of talent with applied skills, capable of thriving in the global economy and contributing meaningfully to the advancement of society.”

President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, remarked that the successful organisation of this international symposium not only demonstrates the close collaboration among the Alliance's member institutions but also provides a platform for further strengthening partnerships with the Mainland and overseas universities and enterprises, promoting the sustainable development of Hong Kong's universities of applied sciences.

The symposium featured keynote and plenary addresses by distinguished international scholars. The Innovation Manager at the Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation in Germany and former Chairman of UAS7, Prof. Andreas Zaby, shared insights on how robust industry and government partnerships stimulate economic growth. Professor of Higher Education at the University of Oslo, Prof. Bjørn Stensaker, then outlined critical factors shaping effective alliance governance. Additionally, Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Education of Peking University, Prof. Po Yang, delivered a plenary presentation on the crucial role of skill intermediaries in applied education.

To facilitate in-depth exchanges, the four member institutions of the Alliance hosted thematic panel discussions featuring representatives from the Mainland, Hong Kong, and overseas. The panel discussion hosted by HKMU is moderated by Prof. A. L. Roy Vellaisamy, Chair Professor of Intelligent Systems in the School of Science and Technology at HKMU.  Panellists included Prof. Holger Haldenwang, Former Dean of SZTU Business School at Shenzhen Technology University, China; Prof. Zhang Yinghe, Chairman of Zhongguancun Changsheng Energy Technology Demonstration Application Industry Alliance, China; Dr Wilko Harms, Head of Function (Global Research and Development) at WIK Domestic Appliances Co. Ltd.; and Mr Spande Chang, Executive Director of Winstar Chemicals. The panel engaged in in-depth discussion on how China and Germany leverage their academia-industry ecosystems to accelerate innovation, strengthen talent pipelines, and drive economic resilience.

As the first university of applied sciences in Hong Kong, HKMU is committed to fostering impactful academic-industry collaboration and promoting the development of applied education in Hong Kong, contributing to the Government's efforts to establish Hong Kong as an international education hub.
