Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) held the Tin Ka Ping Foundation (the Foundation) Cheque Presentation Ceremony on 20 January to express gratitude for the Foundation's longstanding and continuous support for the University. The Foundation recently generously donated HK$4 million to continue funding the “Tin Ka Ping Foundation Bursary” for inmates pursuing further education and to promote the future development of the “Tin Ka Ping Centre of Chinese Culture”.
At the ceremony, HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Foundation for its unwavering support. “The Foundation's support affirms our educational philosophy and inspires confidence in our future,” he said. “This generous donation will support inmate education and promote Chinese cultural heritage, fostering educational and cultural advancement while contributing to the well-being of the community and its future.”
In his speech, Mr Tin Wing-sin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, stated that the Foundation has always upheld the belief that the future of China lies in education. He highlighted the Foundation's collaboration with HKMU in fulfilling their shared commitment to advancing educational development and Chinese cultural heritage. He said, “We sincerely hope that more philanthropists and community leaders will join hands to actively support the University in nurturing socially responsible talent, transforming lives through knowledge, and empowering them to contribute to society.”
In his vote of thanks, Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong, Vice President (Research and Institutional Advancement), expressed his gratitude to the Foundation for its longstanding trust and support. He affirmed that the University would remain steadfast in its commitments and continue to strive for excellence. “As the University's teaching and academic standards continue to rise, we will further fulfil our social responsibilities, making greater contributions to academic exchange and talent cultivation in Hong Kong, the nation and around the globe,” he said.
The cheque presentation ceremony was officiated by Mr Sam Tin Hing-sin, Advisory Board Chairman of the Foundation; Mr Tin Wing-sin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation; Dr Yuen Pong-yiu, Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation; Mr Bryan Tin Lap-yan, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation; Mr David Day, Secretary General of the Foundation, along with HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing; Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong, Vice President (Research and Institutional Advancement); Prof. Charles Kwong Che-leung, Vice President (Administration and Corporate Development); Prof. Roger Michael Scully, Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences (A&SS); and Dr Rebecca Leung Mo-ling, Associate Dean (Administration and Development) of A&SS.
Over the years, the Foundation has been dedicated to promoting education and cultural development. It has generously supported the University in various areas, including academic exchange, cultural heritage and education for disadvantaged communities. In 2015, the Foundation provided funding to establish the “Tin Ka Ping Centre of Chinese Culture”, which regularly organises talks and cultural activities to cultivate a greater understanding of, and interest in, Chinese culture among staff, students and the wider community.
Since 1996, the Foundation has contributed to the University's bursary scheme to support inmate education, cumulatively funding over 500 inmates in their pursuit of higher education and disbursing more than HK$3.3 million in bursaries. In recognition of the Foundation's longstanding support, the University earlier named the scheme the “Tin Ka Ping Foundation Bursary”.
