Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) held its second Mainland Alumni Dinner on 5 September in Shenzhen to foster connections with alumni and friends from various sectors and share the University's latest achievements and developments. In recent years, HKMU has intensified its collaboration with its Mainland partners, including deeper ties with universities of applied sciences in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), the upcoming launch of a new “Master of Professional Management in Global Sports Business” programme in 2026, and the operational start of the HKMU Shenzhen Research Institute (HKMUSRI), supporting innovation and technology development in the GBA.
The dinner was organised by HKMU's Development and Alumni Affairs Office, with over 180 Mainland alumni and friends in attendance, including Mr Wu Junbin from the Shenzhen Liaison Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (LOCPG); and Ms Agnes Siu Boi-phung, Deputy Director of the Shenzhen Liaison Unit of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). Also attending were representatives from closely collaborating institutions, including the Zhongshan Institute of Changchun University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen Technology University and Jinan University.
HKMU to launch a new programme next year to attract outstanding athletes
In his address, HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing stated that the University has been closely cooperating with various Mainland entities to expand its academic and social influence. “As Hong Kong's first university of applied sciences, HKMU is actively seeking like-minded institutions and organisations in the GBA to jointly prepare for the establishment of the 'Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Alliance', leveraging synergies to advance vocational and professional education and training,” he said.
Prof. Lam shared that a University delegation had recently visited Beijing, where they discussed the current situation of active and retired athletes enrolling in universities and exchanged ideas on nurturing talent for the sports industry. The “Master of Professional Management in Global Sports Business”, set to launch in September 2026 aligns perfectly with this initiative, showcasing HKMU's programme flexibility and adaptability. He also highlighted that the University had debuted in the “QS World University Rankings” this year, ranking in the 781–790 range – a significant and encouraging milestone for HKMU.
HKMUSRI in operation to drive GBA innovation and technology development
Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong, Vice President (Research and Institutional Advancement), shared that the HKMUSRI, located in Shenzhen Virtual University Park, had officially commenced operations and that the University has allocated resources and is committed to establishing a research base in Shenzhen. “The University will actively seek opportunities to apply for research funding in the Mainland in the near future to further advance the development of its research projects,” he said.
He added that HKMU is actively expanding its collaboration with higher education institutions in the Mainland to advance scientific research and innovation. For example, HKMU is partnering with the School of Nursing and the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University on cutting-edge research in cardiovascular care and cardio-oncology. In addition, HKMU is collaborating with the Zhongshan Institute of Changchun University of Science and Technology, renowned for its expertise in optoelectronics research, to drive research commercialisation. As part of these efforts, the University launched the “Master of Professional Management in Optical Engineering” programme, aimed at cultivating talent to support the development of the GBA.
Mr Jet Chow Sai-kit, President of the HKMU Alumni Association (HKMUAA), emphasised the pivotal role alumni play in driving the University's development. He shared two significant updates: the “Hong Kong Metropolitan University B&A Postgraduate Alumni Association” becoming a new affiliate member of the HKMUAA; and the establishment of the “Hong Kong Metropolitan University Zhejiang Alumni Association” by Mainland alumni. Mr Chow believes that these developments will expand the University's alumni network and strengthen the bonds among alumni from diverse regions, fostering greater opportunities for exchange and collaboration.
The University representatives attending the dinner included Prof. Charles Kwong Che-leung, Vice-President (Administration and Corporate Development); Ms Zenobia Chia Hoi-ka, Director of Development and Alumni Affairs; Mr Thomas Lee Yat-cheung, Acting Director of Mainland and International Affairs; Mr Wilson Chan Wai-chung, Director of Research Affairs and Knowledge Transfer; and Ms Lee Pik-kwan, Director of Public Affairs. They engaged in exchanges with guests and alumni.
Looking ahead, HKMU will continue to deepen its connections with alumni by organising various and more diversified exchange activities to further unite alumni from all sectors, strengthen bonds and work together to promote the University's development.
