Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) recently held its four-day 37th Winter Congregation, conferring approximately 4,800 bachelor's degrees, postgraduate degrees and other academic qualifications on graduates. Before the ceremony began, all participants stood and observed one moment of silence to honour the victims of the fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po.
In his address, HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing congratulated the graduates on their success in completing their studies and expressed hope that HKMU had nurtured their critical thinking, communication skills, ethics and desire for lifelong learning, so that they are well prepared to enter a fast-changing world filled with new challenges and opportunities, and they can make a positive impact on society.
Prof. Lam also shared the University's recent achievements with the graduates and guests. He highlighted that HKMU has admitted an increasing number of undergraduates through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) and NCEE (Gaokao), reflecting the growing appeal of the university to both local and non-local students and its reputation for academic excellence.
Globally, HKMU rose significantly in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia World University Rankings, advancing from the 701–750 band in 2024 to 393rd place. The University also made its debut in the QS World University Rankings 2026, ranking in the 781–790 range, marking a first for Hong Kong's self-financing institutions and universities of applied sciences
Prof. Lam further highlighted the University's remarkable achievements in other areas, including research strength, support for entrepreneurship and campus development initiatives. “While HKMU is moving full steam ahead with many initiatives and plans, we remain committed to enhancing the employability of our graduates, strategically expanding our research endeavours, and continuing to foster impactful collaborations to create a positive societal impact,” he said.
This year's Congregation took place on 22 November, and 1, 2 and 5 December, comprising a total of 14 sessions. In total, more than 1,300 bachelor's degrees, nearly 2,600 postgraduate degrees and 840 other academic qualifications were conferred.
