The 15th National Games (NG), co-hosted by Hong Kong, will officially kick off this Sunday. The Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) community is playing an active role in support of the Games, serving as volunteer ambassadors, coaches, team members and student volunteers. the HKMU community is ready to cheer on Hong Kong's athletes at these major national events!
Mr Leung Kwok-shing, a distinguished alumnus of HKMU and currently serving as a Volunteer Ambassador for the National Games, encouraged all student volunteers who are about to serve for the Games to support the participants with passion and professionalism, while also ensuring that the audience enjoys the events. As a former athlete, he knows that large-scale sports events rely on numerous volunteers working behind the scenes. He expressed his desire to contribute to the event as a volunteer this time around. He appealed to the student volunteers, saying, “Let's be grateful for this opportunity to contribute, enjoy the process and throw ourselves into our volunteer roles as we work together to 'Be more wonderful for you'!”
Miss Yeung Sau-mei, Hong Kong's first-ever female professional volleyball player and coach of the HKMU Women's Volleyball Team, will serve as assistant coach for the Hong Kong Women's Volleyball Team at the National Games. She described her role as both a great honour and a significant responsibility. She said, “We bear the mission of showcasing Hong Kong's sports spirit and promoting sports exchanges. I will lead the team to strive for excellence with a fighting spirit.”
HKMU alumna Miss Mandy Kan Ming-pui, who is also an athlete with the Orienteering Association of Hong Kong, China, recently represented Hong Kong in a mass participation orienteering race during the 15th National Games. “After two rounds of selection, being chosen to participate in the orienteering event at the National Games was a valuable opportunity,” she said. “As the National Games is the largest and highest-level sports event in the country, competing and interacting with athletes from other provinces was an unforgettable experience.”
Rain Lam Wing-tung, a Year 2 student in the Bachelor of Business Administration in Sports and Recreation Management programme, and Irene Tsoi Mae-xu, a Year 2 student in the Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours in Sports and eSports Management programme, will serve as student volunteers. Both students consider this a valuable opportunity to participate in a major sporting event and support Hong Kong athletes.
Rain said that this experience will be crucial for her future career development, as it will enhance her understanding of, and enrich her experience in, sports events, especially large-scale ones. She said, “I hope to learn from the athletes' spirit and apply it to my own career in sports, gaining valuable experience and skills along the way.”
Irene shared per perspective, saying, “Being a volunteer for the National Games is not just about helping the event run smoothly; it's also about interacting with people from diverse backgrounds and sharing our passion for sports.” She added that she hopes to learn from others' strengths through these interactions and continue to improve herself.
Together with 25 other students from the Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration and the School of Nursing and Health Studies, this group will serve as volunteers and first aid team members for the National Games, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities (NGD) and the 9th National Special Olympic Games (NSOG) in the Hong Kong competition region. Together they will ensure that the Games proceed smoothly and safely, working hard to successfully host this flagship sports event.
