Department of Creative Arts About us Message From The Head
In response to the latest trends of social development, the Department of Creative Arts (School of Arts and Social Sciences) at Hong Kong Metropolitan University of  strives to train highly skilled professionals for the creative industry. According to the “Report on Manpower Projection to 2022” released by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2015, the cultural and creative industries in the city will continue to thrive in the years ahead. Hence, the demand for innovative experts in the fields of creative writing, film production, TV production, advertising & media design, photography, visual design, animation, and visual effects is expected to accelerate. In light of this, our department is committed to developing effective programmes that address the specific needs of the society.  In 2008, the Department of Creative Arts took the initiative to launch the Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Creative Writing and Film Arts programme. It was also the first 4-year Bachelor's degree programme designed particularly for training creative writing professionals in Hong Kong. In subsequent years, our department continued to launch three additional programmes including Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in Cinematic Design and Photographic Digital Art, Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in Animation and Visual Effects as well as Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Creative Advertising and Media Design. All these programmes have gained great popularity in the society and among students. To address the needs of the society, we have recently added two new programmes, namely Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Computing and Interactive Entertainment as well as Master of Creative and Cultural Industries Management.
The training we provide is unique, which sets us apart from other creative arts disciplines in the higher education sector of Hong Kong. Our curriculum design emphasizes the importance of originality and industrialization. Integrating literary texts with visual aesthetics, our courses aim at helping students develop universal values and global perspectives. Our teaching team consists of distinguished experts from the academic and professional sectors. They are recognized for exemplary performance along with extensive experience in academic research, teaching, and their respective fields of specialization. Under the close supervision of all colleagues in the team, both current students and graduates of the Department of Creative Arts have won countless awards over the years, which cover a broad spectrum of areas such as creative writing, film production, photography, animation, advertising campaign, etc. Many of them have been recognized in international competitions and exhibitions such as Golden Horse Awards (Taiwan), DigiCon6 ASIA Awards (Japan), Sony World Photography Awards, National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year, Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival in Hong Kong, Kam Fan Awards from the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of Hong Kong, Global Youth Chinese Literary Awards, etc. These achievements are the result of the collective efforts of our teaching team and students. They also serve as a testimony to our commitment to quality education.
Hong Kong Metropolitan University has offered unwavering support to the initiatives advocated by the Department of Creative Arts. In recent years, the Jockey Club Campus has been equipped with a wide range of resources such as creative arts studios and laboratories, TV studios, sound studios, computer centers, etc. This has also fostered a positive learning environment conducive to student creativity. Besides working in close collaboration with the universities in Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, and other overseas countries, the department has established strong partnership with numerous public and private organizations associated with the cultural and creative industries. By promoting active participation in intellectual exchange, project-based learning, internships, and other marketing efforts, we are committed to providing students with optimal opportunities so that they can learn through experience, interaction and cooperation.
In the future, we will continue our ongoing efforts to explore even more collaboration opportunities to empower our students with better education, more diversified experiences, and a broader academic vision. Our department is on a mission to work in the best interest of students as we fulfill our goals to keep up with the ever-changing world and provide well-trained practitioners for the creative arts industry.
