Ms Gigi Tung Oi-lai, founder of the Bo Charity Foundation, shared the philosophy behind her initiative Food Angel programme and how it promotes the reduction of food waste during the Talk of the Metropolis held on 28 November 2024. Ms Tung recounted how photographs of elderly individuals collecting discarded cardboard on the streets motivated her to launch a programme for producing free meals from recycled surplus food. To date, Food Angel collects dozens of tonnes of edible surplus food every week, producing over 20,000 free meals every day for those in need of food assistance.

Becoming a founding member of the Alliance of Universities of Applied Sciences

With the support of the Education Bureau, the Alliance of Universities of Applied Sciences was officially launched on 11 November 2024. HKMU, being the first approved university of applied sciences in Hong Kong, became one of the four founding members of the Alliance and serves as its secretariat. Among the founding members, HKMU and St. Francis University are full members, while Tung Wah College and the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong are associate members.

The government has allocated a start-up fund of $100 million to support the establishment of the Alliance. President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing said that the Alliance will use the funds to launch its first international conference early this year, inviting experts in applied sciences from mainland China and overseas to Hong Kong to exchange experiences in promoting vocational and professional education and training. Furthermore, member institutions of the Alliance can apply for funding from the Steering Committee on the Alliance for their research and curriculum development projects.
