anniversary finale celebrations

Established in 1989, HKMU has made a remarkable leap forward over the past 35 years, transforming from an institution primarily offering distance education for working adults into a modern full-fledged university and the largest self-financing institution in Hong Kong. Early last year, we achieved another milestone by becoming Hong Kong's first university of applied sciences, dedicated to cultivating more outstanding talents needed by society.

To celebrate its 35th anniversary, the University kicked off a year-long celebration in January 2024 with a ceremony at the Annual Staff Party. Following this, a variety of exciting events were rolled out, culminating in the 35th Anniversary Banquet in last November, which elevated the festive atmosphere to its peak.

35th Anniversary Banquet

Held on 1 November 2024 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the banquet brought together nearly 700 friends, alumni, staff and students in a lively and warm ambiance. Mr John Lee Ka-chiu, Chief Executive of the HKSAR Government and HKMU Chancellor, delivered a video address in which he encouraged the University to continue its efforts in nurturing talent, fostering technological development and establishing the “Study in Hong Kong” brand globally, thereby helping Hong Kong become a hub for high-calibre talent.

The banquet invited Mr Cheuk Wing-hing, Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR Government, as Guest of Honour. Other officiating guests included Mr Wang Weiming, Director-General of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Dr Eddy Fong Ching, Pro-chancellor; Ir Dr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung, Council Chairman; Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, President; Dr Peter Lee Kwok-wah, HKMU Foundation Advisory Committee Chairman; Dr Cheng Hon-kwan, founding Council Chairman; Prof. Wong Yuk-shan, Emeritus President; Mr Jet Chou Sai-kit, HKMU Alumni Association President; and Mr Chan Tsz-lok, Students' Union President. Also attending the banquet was Dr Choi Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education of the HKSAR.

The evening featured a series of talent performances presented by the University's students and alumni, elevating the atmosphere to one climax after another. Highlights included a rhythmic dance, a guzheng performance accompanied by animations created by students, and a collaborative rendition of “We are all HKMU” sung by several students and alumni, a song co-created by an alumna and a teacher.
