Academic schools & division

The OUHK has five academic schools. Among them, the School of Arts & Social Sciences, Lee Shau Kee School of Business & Administration, School of Education & Languages and School of Science & Technology offer programmes and courses at various academic levels in distance learning, full-time, part-time face-to-face and online modes of study, while the Li Ka Shing Institute of Professional & Continuing Education (LiPACE) specializes in providing professional programmes, workplace training programmes, community learning projects and short courses. In addition, the Division of Nursing & Health Studies under the School of Science & Technology provides quality nursing and healthcare education to meet society’s needs.

School of Science & Technology
The School of Science & Technology is an important training ground for science and technology professionals. Its programme offerings span the areas of applied science, computing and information technology, engineering, environmental studies, mathematics and statistics, nursing, and testing and certification, among which the nursing programmes are administered by the Division of Nursing & Health Studies. These programmes aim to impart modern scientific knowledge to students and develop students’ information technology skills, to prepare them to play leading roles in their respective sector of science and technology. In addition to fully-furnished laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities, students also enjoy abundant practical work-study opportunities and participation in field trips and site visits in actual operational environments.

The grand opening of the Institute for Research in Innovative Technology & Sustainability (IRITS) in 2015 marked an important milestone of the School. Supported by the RGC’s Competitive Research Funding Schemes for Local Self-financing Institutions, the Institute aims to strengthen the University’s capacity in environmental science research, in particular algae and water quality, and develop the state of the art of computer engineering. While the OUHK has all along been a teaching university, the establishment of IRITS reflects a greater emphasis on developing the University’s scientific research capability, which will in turn benefit the development of programmes and courses.

Another remarkable development in 2015 was that the School’s Testing & Certification Programme Team was officially appointed the assessment agency to conduct Prior Learning Assessment for practitioners in the Testing, Inspection & Certification (TIC) Industry. Under the Recognition of Prior Learning Mechanism, experienced TIC practitioners are able to obtain formal recognition of their knowledge and skills through assessment by senior and experienced academic staff of the School. This is an important recognition by the industry as well as the Government for the University’s capacity and leading position in testing and certification. The School is committed to investing more resources to the further development and upscaling of the discipline so as to provide highly dependable training to new talent.
