Record-high Government scholarships
2015 saw a record 304 OUHK awardees for the largest HK$7.06 million in scholarships from the Self-financing Post-secondary Scholarship Scheme (SPSS). Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, Secretary for Education, officiated at the presentation ceremony.

Sir Robert Black Trust Fund Scholarships

Fourteen graduates from LiPACE’s Yi Jin Diploma programmes gained the Sir Robert Black Trust Fund Scholarships — the highest number of awardees for any single programme among all programme providers.

ICT Expo showcases student mobile apps
Full-time students from Computing and Web Technologies were invited to showcase their final year project on mobile applications at the ICT Expo organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. The event took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 13-16 April 2015.
Student Rugby Society teams shine in tournaments
At the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union’s Tertiary Touch Championship on 19 April 2015, the Student Rugby Society teams won Cup first runner-up and Shield Champion in the mixed division. They also pocketed the ladies’ division championship and came in second runner-up for men in the T24 Tai Po Dragon Tertiary Warm-Up Tournament of the Tai Po Rugby Football Club held on 11 April 2015. On New Year’s Day 2016, the Men’s team made its debut in the Standard Chartered — Tertiary Rugby Invitational Sevens Tournament 2016 and won Cup Champion of beginner division.
Computing students win Best Paper at ASEAN Undergrad Conference
A team of eight Computing and Web Technologies students was led by Dr Oliver Au to the ASEAN Undergraduate Conference in Computing held in May 2015 in Thailand. Lee Sung-hei, Lau On-ki and Cheong Chi-yin won the Best Paper Award (English category), while the other students also received recognitions of merit.
Cross-cultural internship in New York
Full-time students Jian Yutong, Li Yanjun, Lin Xuan, Mok Ho-tung and Wong Yuen-ki were among the 71 selected from 1,000 university students across Asia Pacific for the US Department of State’s Cross-cultural Internship Programme held in the summer of 2015. This programme nurtures global vision by assigning interns to government district offices, media companies, real estate agencies etc. It includes cultural and community service activities, with visits to Washington DC, east coast universities and financial institutions, and watching baseball games.
OSH graduates win First & Merit Awards
Lau Ka-wai and Lee Ka-pui, graduates of Bachelor of Science with Honours in Occupational Safety and Health, which was jointly offered by LiPACE and Middlesex University (UK), won the First Place and Merit Awards respectively at the Student Papers Competition of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. Ka-wai’s winning paper compared the effectiveness of cooling vests, among other safety measures, to reduce risks of heat stroke in kitchens of Chinese restaurants, while Ka-pui conducted a critical analysis of hazards related to lifting operations by derrick booms.
Technology Challenge Cup teams for national competition
Six teams from the School of Science & Technology received merits in Information Technology and Chemical Engineering divisions of the ‘Challenge Cup — Hong Kong University Students Extra-curriculum Technology Contest’ held in May 2015. They also attended the biennial national competition held in November in Guangzhou to compete with students from more than 500 universities across the nation and won three second class and three third class awards.

The OUHK team was overall champion, winning three gold, two silver and one bronze at the first Hang Seng Management College Sports Invitation Game in July 2015, in men’s and women’s divisions.
LiPACE team wins business case competition
Students from 20 tertiary institutions of Hong Kong and mainland China formed 193 teams to compete in the Accounting and Business Management Case Competition 2014–15 organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Accredited Accounting Technicians. The teams were required to submit a business and strategic proposal to the Luk Fook Holdings (International) Limited, and among them were 51 LiPACE students in 14 teams from the Higher Diploma and Diploma programmes of Accounting, Business Management and Business Studies. Four of the LiPACE teams were selected as ‘Outstanding Performance Teams’ and ‘Proficiency Teams’, among which the team formed by Cheng Yan-ming, Yeung Yeung, Ho Chak-fan and Kwok Ka-hei was judged overall champion team, and Yeung Yeung won the ‘Best Presenter’ award. They were also offered a summer internship at Luk Fook.
Business students join community intern programme

Six students from the Lee Shau Kee School of Business & Administration took part in the 5th Citi-HKSS Community Intern Programme and were involved in fundraising, brand-building and social service for organizations assisting low-income, elderly and disabled people. Prior to the four-to-eight week summer internships in July and August 2015, students were given 20 hours of training to understand community social and environmental issues, and to enhance relevant skills. The Programme was officially opened by Secretary for Financial Services & the Treasury Prof. K C Chan on 16 June 2015.

Interior Design students awarded for
dementia-friendly innovation

LiPACE Higher Diploma in Interior Design students Loo Fu-fong, Lo Ki-on and Yang Wei won the Second Social Innovation Inventor — Competition for Innovative Design organized by the World Green Organization. The winning design for a public housing flat to house a dementia patient and two other occupants incorporated transparent cabinets for enhanced visibility, wheelchair mobility and smart use of limited space, plus a familiar feel for elderly comfort. The prize earned the team a study tour to Cambridge University.

Business paper tops Chartered Secretaries competition
Full-time students Kingston Suen King-ho, Grace Gu Run and Ray Ho Wai-yan from the Lee Shau Kee School of Business & Administration topped the Corporate Governance Paper Competition 2015 of The Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries. Their ‘Risk Management & Corporate Governance’ paper beat 38 other entries from local tertiary institutions. It was published in the December 2015 issue of the Institute’s journal CSj.
Top Affiliate award at ACCA exam
Accounting graduate Paul Kong Yee-king was among ten Hong Kong candidates who attained the highest marks in the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Professional Level examinations of June 2015, gaining the Top Affiliate Award.
OSH undergraduate wins Student Project Competition
For four years, LiPACE students have excelled in the Student Project Competition of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers. For the 2015 competition, Hui Cheuk-hin, undergraduate in the Occupational Safety, Health & Environment programme jointly offered by LiPACE and Middlesex University (UK), won Certificate of Merit for his project entitled ‘A Critical Study on Electrical Work Safety in Minor Renovation and Maintenance Works’. He was also champion in the Student Papers Competition 2016 of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, while the Merit Award went to graduate Li Sin-ting.

Full-time students Chan Chun-hang, Chan Mei-lam, Chan Tsz-fung, Siriphong Chaimart, Cheung Ching-chi, Cheung Ming-kit, Louis Lee Lap-pui, Li Lok-hei, Tsoi Fung-wai and Yung Wai-kit raced carrying a disabled youth at the Diamond Sedan Competition organized by Diamond Cab on 29 November 2015 in Stanley. They placed third in the open group.
Computing graduate wins 3rd prize in IEEE Student Paper Contest
Lee Chung-yin was awarded third prize for his final year project on the application of augmented reality in home furnishing and layout design, in the undergraduate section of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers) Hong Kong Section Student Paper Contest 2015.
First & second runners-up at
business start-up competition
Eleven full-time students from Professional Accounting, Computing, Business Management and International Business programmes formed two teams to compete in the ‘Help You to Start Your Business’ competition of the Hong Kong Computer & Communications Festival 2015. They formulated marketing strategies and manned an exhibition booth, and were placed first and second runners-up.
Students as hospitality ambassadors
The Hong Kong Young Ambassador Scheme nurtures young people to be ambassadors for hospitality and service excellence to the community. It is organized by the HKSAR Tourism Commission and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. Full-time Professional Accounting student Chiu Yuet-wa was appointed this year’s ambassador. Full-time students Ng Chung-ting, Wong Sin-yin and Chan Hiu-tung from the School of Arts & Social Sciences of the 2014/15 batch of ambassadors were praised for outstanding performance at the award ceremony on 18 August 2015.
Accounting team second in tax debate
At the Taxation Institute of Hong Kong’s Tax Debate Competition for tertiary institutions held in May 2015, a team of full-time Accounting students, Au Yung-fan, Lam Oi-yan, Lee Wai-sum and Wong Oi-lam, gained second place.
‘Prism Rings’ show by Commercial Photography graduates
Nine graduates of LiPACE’s Professional Diploma in Commercial Photography programme displayed works themed ‘Prism Rings’ at ARTRA Art Space, Sheung Wan in October 2015. The concept references the growth of trees for different aspects of life and memories in Hong Kong.
Three students win in EOC photo competition
Out of 200 entries, Global Business & Marketing student Yuen Wing-yan won second place in the Equal Opportunities Photo Competition co-organized by the Equal Opportunities Commission and ten local tertiary institutions. Merit prizes were awarded to Cinematic, Design & Photographic Digital Art student Kwok Man-tai and to Wong Miu-in, studying Chinese. Yuen Wing-yan attended the presentation ceremony on 11 March 2016.
Honesty theme short film wins ICAC competition
Thirteen students of the Creative Writing & Film Arts programme won the ‘Most Viewed Integrity Microfilm’ and the ‘Practitioners’ Choice’ awards of the ICAC Microfilm Online Fest with their entry An Honest Restaurant. The winning team aimed to use a start-up restaurant experience to project values of honesty and integrity.
‘Most Touching Film’ award to young film-makers
From the Creative Writing & Film Arts programme, students Lee Tsz-ching, Henry Kwan Ho-wai, Yip Chun-fung, Yvonne Sun Wing-yi, Tsang Sze-kei, Anna Chan Chui-mei and Bobby Lin Wei-ting submitted Love No Barrier: Believe to the Rotary Golden Flower Youth Awards 2016 and won the ‘Most Touching Film’ award. They featured a visually impaired lead actor, to encourage social inclusiveness.
Nursing student to Japan on Youth Exchange Programme

Full-time Nursing student Bernice Wong Lok-ting was picked for the International Youth Exchange Programme co-organized by the Home Affairs Bureau and the Commission on Youth. She was among the 15 outstanding young people from local tertiary institutions who visited Kagoshima, Japan from 24 September to 1 October 2015. Bernice lived with a local family, visited government offices and historical sites and participated in a variety of cultural activities.

Business students selected for Alibaba e-commerce
training programme
In January 2016, 18 full-time students from the Lee Shau Kee School of Business & Administration were selected for an e-commerce training programme co-organized by the Hong Kong Netrepreneurs Association, Alibaba Group and the Unleash Foundation, to prepare them for local e-business opportunities. The five-day programme covered starting up business on the Alibaba platform, cross-border logistics and market analysis. All the students were offered internship opportunities in small and medium enterprises.
Computer networking champion
Full-time Computer Engineering student Lau Lap-hou won the Hong Kong & Macau 2015 NetRiders CCNA Skills Competition organized by the Cisco Networking Academy. He went on to compete at the Greater China and Mongolia region final round in September.
LiPACE champion wins at

Yeung Lau-sin and Hui Ho-yeung were champions in the LiPACE Singing Contest 2015/16. Lau-sin represented LiPACE and won the Merit Award at the joint school singing contest of the Federation for Self-financing Tertiary Education.

Don’t lose hope: ‘Swim against the stream’

Mr Leung Kee-cheong, OUHK alumnus and former principal of the Fresh Fish Traders’ School, talked about how to cope with difficulties at a talk on 25 June 2015. Using his own experiences of saving the school from closure for several times, he urged students not to give up when facing adverse challenges.

Training for Putonghua recitation adjudicators

Participants improved their recitation adjudication and analysis skills through practice sessions in a training workshop organized by the Putonghua Association of the OUHK (Alumni). The Association celebrated its fifth anniversary at a gathering with 50 members present.

Summer internships organized by Social Sciences alumni
A summer internship programme to familiarize full-time students with the operations of the Hong Kong & China Gas Company Limited, and community work with district offices of the Democratic Party was organized by the Alumni Association of Social Sciences (Full-time Programme).

Extreme marathon enthusiast’s life tips
Mr Quincy Wong Lee-man, Chairman of Convoy Financial Group, is an extreme marathon enthusiast with ambitions to run on seven continents, both poles and the Sahara Desert. Mr Wong sees marathons as a metaphor for life: ‘Today is the first day of the rest of your life.’ His ‘Polar Marathon & I’ talk was organized by the Alumni Affairs Office of the Public Affairs Unit on 8 October 2015.
‘A Taste of the Good Life’ cooking workshops
‘A Taste of the Good Life’ cooking workshops to strengthen alumni networks were organized by the Alumni Affairs Office of the Public Affairs Unit starting from January 2016, and were fully subscribed. Turnip pudding, walnut cookies and mango mille-feuilles were made at the Chinese New Year and Easter baking workshops. The last of the series, ‘Big Feast for Mother’s Day’ featured a three-course family western dinner.

The Alumni Society of the School of Arts & Social Sciences celebrated its tenth anniversary with a dinner party on 17 October 2015, distributing a souvenir book to participants.

The Alumni Association of the OUHK held its Annual General Meeting on 6 March 2016. The past year’s performance was reviewed and plans for the coming year were presented. New board members were also appointed.

The world is our campus
In the past year, our students have travelled to many places of the world on study and exchange tours. They had many eye-opening experiences visiting cultural and historical sites, meeting local friends and earning all kinds of knowledge in a specific cultural setting. Some of them took part in voluntary work, bringing love and care to communities outside Hong Kong.
Our sporting spirit
Apart from classroom learning, our students demonstrate their talents in sports and participate in various sports activities, adding vitality and energy to the campus.
