都會大學與深圳兩大機構合作 建立大灣區紅樹林濕地研發中心

香港都會大學與廣東內伶仃福田國家級自然保護區管理局及深圳大學,在10月19日簽訂框架協議,共同建立「大灣區紅樹林濕地研發中心」(中心),促進深港合作和發展大灣區紅樹林濕地研究。

框架協議簽署儀式由都大學術副校長關清平教授、深圳大學副校長李永華教授,以及廣東內伶仃福田國家級自然保護區管理局鄧子兵局長簽署,並由都大科技學院院長王富利教授、譚鳳儀講座教授,以及科學學系系主任李宏發教授見證。

關清平教授表示:「本校於2019年獲香港研究資助局撥款設立『粵港澳大灣區海岸濕地基礎及應用研究中心實驗室』,資助額達港幣930萬元,為全年同類成功申請撥款的項目中最高,彰顯大學在粵港澳大灣區海岸濕地基礎及應用研究中的潛力。期望是次合作能進一步促進深港科研交流,共同完善大灣區紅樹林等濕地研究。」

中心立足後海灣(深圳灣),旨在發展先進的開放式科研中心,打造成設施先進、機制靈活、人才優秀的科研平台,同時促進深港兩地研究人員的合作交流,推動濕地資源保護、重要海洋生物和生態環境等領域的研究發展。中心亦將探索保護與修復濱海濕地技術,研究紅樹林濕地的生態系統,提升粵港澳大灣區濱海濕地的生態環境,並致力推動濕地的保育管理和宣傳教育工作 。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
