都大研究發現中藥丹參有效減低治癌西藥副作用 中西合醫促進治癌成效

香港都會大學(都大)研究發現傳統中藥丹參中的成分,能有助減低一種治癌藥物誘發高血壓的副作用,從而提升治療效果。都大團隊現正進一步研究丹參的最佳提取物及與抗癌西藥同時使用的效果,預料研究成果將為中西醫結合模式治療癌症提供更有力的支持,為癌症病人對抗西藥副作用帶來曙光。

西藥「貝伐珠單抗」(Bevacizumab)是治療大腸癌或肺癌的第一線藥物,透過抑制血管新生而產生抗癌作用。其常見副作用是誘發高血壓。現時,雖有藥物可針對「貝伐珠單抗」誘發的高血壓,卻同時會抑制其抗血管新生作用,減低治癌成效,醫學界因此一直未有就治療「貝伐珠單抗」誘發的高血壓制訂以實證為基礎的指引。

由都大科技學院應用科學系助理教授及生物醫學與生物科技課程主任黃詩韻博士領導的一項最新的研究發現,丹參的活躍成分丹參素能降低血壓,同時不會影響「貝伐珠單抗」的治療成效。臨床上,丹參經常獲中醫用於治療心血管疾病。最近,丹參的水溶性萃取物更被發現具有與西藥「貝伐珠單抗」相近的特性,可抑制血管新生,能促進治癌成效。黃博士繼而發現以不同方法萃取的丹參成分對癌症有不同的治療效果,如以煎煮手法萃取丹參素、水溶性萃取方法或以溶劑提取等方法,對降低血壓的成效不一。

除身兼教研職位,黃詩韻博士亦是一名註冊中醫師,又具備藥理及藥劑學博士學位資格,其教學及研究範圍包括中醫、藥劑學、癌症治療及血管生物學等,並重點研究中西藥結合療法。黃博士現時正致力於研究出最佳的丹參提取物,以及結合丹參與西藥的療法的效果,預期這項研究將大大改善抗癌藥物「貝伐珠單抗」的應用。

這項研究由都大與香港大學李嘉誠醫學院合作進行,並在研究資助局最新一輪「本地自資學位界別競逐研究資助計劃」中取得逾130萬港元資助,研究實力備受肯定。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
