都大成立「都會藻種庫」 推動大灣區及東南亞地區微藻研究

香港都會大學(都大)在環境科學研究成就卓越,尤其在紅潮和微藻的科研及應用方面取得不少重要成果。為進一步推動大灣區以至東南亞地區的微藻研究,都大科技學院於2022年建立了本地首個對外開放的微藻收集及研究中心,名為「都會藻種庫」。

微藻是存在於淡水和海洋中的單細胞光合作用生物,其平均體積僅5微米,但對環境和人類的具重大影響。都大科技學院副院長、專研微藻類生物的李宏發教授指出,近年許多研究發現微藻具有極高的應用價值,例如可提煉成生物燃料和生物塑膠等。然而,不同微藻物種具有不同特性,一如紅潮會嚴重破壞生態,對水產養殖業和捕漁業帶來巨大經濟損失。他補充:「因此,將微藻進行分類鑒定並善加利用,對環境、社會和經濟發展有莫大裨益。」

為了加快相關研究的進展,歐美多地均有建立藻種庫。都大科技學院助理教授陳文藝博士表示,香港亦需要有相關平台促進學術研究。現時,除日本以外,「都會藻種庫」是亞洲地區唯一對外開放的藻種庫。他闡釋:「『都會藻種庫』具有背靠祖國,面向世界的天然優勢,可以為大灣區以至東南亞地區的藻類研究提供堅實支持,並成爲與世界交流的平台。」

設備完善的藻種庫,旨在更有效地收集、保育和利用微藻資源,還會定期在香港及大灣區沿海地區收集微藻樣本,並進行分析和鑒定,以辨識種類和特性。此外,藻種庫會保存藻種樣本並將相關資料如品種、生長條件等存入數據庫,以便日後參考研究,進一步探索微藻的多樣性和應用價值。

同時,藻種庫的研究團隊還舉辦講座、研討會和培訓等活動,提高本地師生和學者對微藻生態的認知和環境保育意識,促進知識交流和合作,推動微藻研究的發展,並將最新的研究成果與公眾分享;又會設立線上平台,發布微藻相關資訊和研究成果,並提供藻種的分銷及寄存服務,使研究人員和相關機構能更輕鬆地獲取微藻相關資源。

李宏發教授期望「都會藻種庫」能夠為都大以至本地微藻研究奠下厚實基礎,展望未來,藻種庫將繼續累積科研成果,為香港以至世界的環境科學研究持續作出貢獻。

憑藉都大微藻研究的實力,其科技學院的科研團隊亦將展開「紅樹葉片酚類物質的氧化活性及其對有害藻類生長和生理的抑製作用及分子機制」研究,期望為防治紅潮的工作帶來新方向,該項目獲研究資助局「本地自資學位界別競逐研究資助計劃」撥款逾一百萬港元支持。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
