都大全新醫療科學實驗室九月啟用 配備先進設施加强學生職前培訓

香港都會大學(都大)今年九月開辦「醫療化驗科學榮譽理學士課程」,收生反應踴躍;為配合課程發展,全新興建、配備先進專業儀器的7,000平方呎醫療科學實驗室屆時將同步正式啟用。

座落於都大正校園的實驗室,因應課程五大核心範疇,設有五個實驗室專區,涵蓋「臨床血液及輸血科學」、「臨床化學及免疫學」、「醫學微生物學」、「病理組織學」和「分子診斷學」的化驗工作,支援相關範疇的教學及研究。實驗室配備醫院廣泛採用的先進化驗儀器,有助加強同學職前培訓。

根據特區政府預測,至2030年,本港每年會出現高達300多名全職醫務化驗師空缺。都大學術副校長關清平教授指出:「都大開辦該新課程,正正回應社會殷切需求,並投放資源增建醫療科學實驗室,結合本校在醫療健康、生命科學和檢測及認證方面的專長,繼續以先進科技及跨學科協作,為本港培育傑出醫療化驗人才。」

關教授續稱﹕「大學亦計劃將實驗室全面智能化,配備自動化實驗室監察系統、機械人系統、智能眼鏡等先進器材,打造成全港首個智能醫療化驗教學實驗室。」

醫療化驗科學榮譽理學士課程主要培訓合資格的醫務化驗師,畢業生可以從事醫務化驗工作。課程根據醫務化驗師管理委員會的要求設計,而委員會已正式為該課程展開評審工作,經評審通過後,學生完成課程後可取得註冊醫務化驗師資格。

都大科技學院院長王富利教授表示:「隨著科學進步,大數據分析應用成為醫療發展的新趨勢。因此,課程亦與時並進,加入生物訊息學及加強分子診斷的訓練;並特別加入實驗室管理和認證的內容,務求讓同學吸收專業學術知識之餘,亦可使用全新醫療科學實驗室,得到大量應用及實踐的機會,為將來投身行業打好根基。」

本課程的教學團隊具有醫務化驗師認可資歷,並具備豐富業界醫療化驗經驗,部分教學人員擁有20至30年的工作經驗,同時亦已聘請兩位科學主任加強實驗室的培訓。

都大2021年獲教育局「自資專上教育提升及啟動補助金計劃」撥款4,000萬港元,作為開辦「醫療化驗科學榮譽理學士」課程的起動資助。此外,醫療化驗科學理學碩士已率先於去年開辦,滿足行業持續進修需要,首屆學生將於今年年底畢業,大部分畢業生從事醫療化驗相關工作。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
