研發截殺新冠病毒過濾技術

創新及科技局局長薛永恒今日(4月12日)到訪香港都會大學(都大),了解大學的最新研究發展,並與管理層及科研人員就創科發展進行交流。

到訪期間,都大校長林群聲教授與嘉賓分享大學的科研成果,以及與業界夥伴的合作項目,包括大學參與研究及技術支援的C-POLAR空氣過濾專利技術。

都大科技學院早前受世寶生科有限公司(C-POLAR Biotech Limited)委託,設計技術方案,用以測試他們研發的正極性聚合物的空氣過濾效能,並進一步協助將技術應用於口罩、空調系統過濾網及其他產品。

大學科研人員及C-POLAR Biotech代表向薛局長,講解研發技術及日後應用潛力,並展示成功研發的產品,及相關技術為香港社會及海外用戶所帶來的裨益。

都大參與的研究項目,科研團隊透過反覆測試,發現強正極性聚合物濾層,可有效截殺細菌及病毒,包括變種新冠病毒。團隊表示,殺滅原理是以物理方法進行,有關技術不會產生細胞毒性,對人體無害。相關技術亦通過多間海外病毒實驗室的測試,其功效已獲驗證,英國公營醫療服務機構已利用相關物料及技術,製造FFP3高防護口罩。

此外,本港多幢甲級商廈、大型購物商場和醫院已試行裝置該技術的空調濾網。結果證明,除有效截殺空氣中的細菌及病毒,更可大幅改善壓力下降情況,因而提升能源效益。有關的空氣過濾技術早前已獲政府資訊科技總監辦公室舉辦的「2021香港資訊及通訊科技獎」頒發智慧生活大獎。都大科研團隊將進一步推展項目,令技術應用至其他醫療及生活產品上,保障大眾健康。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
