最新研資局高額資助項目

大學在研究資助局(研資局)新一輪「自資學位界別競逐研究資助計劃」中,獲撥款逾1,610 萬元,用以開展18個研究項目。當中除一項屬「跨院校發展計劃」外,其餘項目均屬「教員發展計劃」,合共獲批1,570 萬元,款額為競逐院校中最高。部分項目分別獲批逾100 萬元,其中一項獲撥的金額更稱冠「教員發展計劃」!

提升紙芯片檢測細菌和毒性的準確度

科技學院陳鍵林博士領導的項目獲批最多撥款,此項目旨在改善一種愈來愈常用於測量細菌和毒性的設備的準確度。有見化學指示劑如「刃天青」固定到「紙基微流控芯片」後,還原速度遠較處於游離溶液中緩慢,而箇中機理未明,陳博士的項目將為這差異提供理論解釋。

分析附生於紅樹品種「白骨壤」氣根的微生物群落的生態功能

在環境科學領域,科技學院李宏發教授聚焦福田國家級自然保護區內一種愈來愈受到威脅的天然紅樹物種――「白骨壤」(Avicennia marina)。白骨壤的出水通氣根附生了多樣性豐富的微生物群落。通過分析這些微生物群落的結構,李教授的研究將闡明它們對維持白骨壤生機的作用,有助制定保護該物種的對策。

與此同時,本校的海洋和海岸研究工作最近有兩項令人振奮的發展:一是都大成為了香港城市大學「海洋污染國家重點實驗室」的成員院校之一;二是大學與福田國家級自然保護區管理局和深圳大學簽署了框架協議,在福田保護區共同建設「大灣區紅樹林濕地研發中心」。這是本校繼早前憑研資局撥款在校園內建立「大學研究設施」後,在相同範疇再邁進一步。

研發用於Python 編程課程的學習分析干預系統

在學習分析領域,李兆基商業管理學院蔡秉文博士嘗試建構一個幫助學生學習 Python 編程的互動平台。這將是首個全面顧及學習分析週期各個階段的平台―獲取、報告、預測、行動和改進,並會利用強化學習技術進行學習干預,成為學習分析的示範模型。

以改良的多模態深度學習識別社交媒體中的謠言

另一個與機器學習相關的項目由科技學院李立基博士領導,項目的目標是識別社交媒體上的謠言。「多模態深度學習」是機器「學習」多模態數據的過程,例如提取社交媒體的文本和圖像,由於機器提取不同類型數據的方式有差異,因此甚具挑戰性。此研究項目將設計出一個能夠融合不同模態數據的機器學習模型。

對資優青少年的抑鬱症狀進行跨文化研究

人文社會科學院張浩南博士致力從兩個角度擴闊現時有關資優青少年抑鬱症狀的研究:一是收集跨文化的龐大樣本,以解決過往研究過於集中美國數據的不足;二是將學術成績不佳但認知能力強的人士加入研究,並把他們辦識出來。研究結果將為未來追蹤研究奠下重要基礎。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
