提升熱傳導發電機效能 都會大學教授冀推動可持續工業廢熱再用

華禮生教授 (Prof. Roy Vellaisamy) 是香港都會大學(都大)科技學院新任智能系統講座教授,其研發的創新熱傳導發電機設計,大幅提高熱電轉換效率,以高效持久方式將工業廢熱直接轉換為可用電力,彰顯科研應用解決現實難題的效用。

熱傳導發電機在回收工業廢熱方面潛力巨大,但現有設計受組成物料脆弱及轉換效率未如理想限制。結合化學物理學及材料工程學方面的專長,華教授及其團隊研發出採用部分碳化3D微晶格結構材料的創新解決方案。他解釋:「這種創新結構提高了機械強度之餘,也大幅提升熱電轉換效率。」有關突破已詳細發表於Nature Communications期刊。

經重新設計的微結構熱傳導發電機,效率及機械強度均大幅提升,使其非常適合用於工業廢熱回收,為能源的可持續運用邁出一大步。華教授富實用價值的創新科研,展示了應用研究如何解決現實問題,與大學透過創新造福社會的宗旨不謀而合。

除材料工程外,華教授的研究亦涉獵智能系統範疇。他目前正與科技學院機器學習團隊合作分析診斷數據。他表示:「材料工程及智能系統在多個領域重疊。我們在分子層面設計感應器,產生大量數據,擁有機器學習背景的同事利用AI分析,再利用系統反饋將結果智能化。」

華教授亦十分支持跨學科協作,以達致最大社會效益。雖然在大學的實驗室仍在籌備當中,但他已牽頭與護理及健康學院和人文社會科學院就心血管疾病診斷項目進行跨學科合作研究。他認為:「協作可加快研究效率,迅速促成有意義的影響。我正與護理及健康學院合作招募人員測試儀器並收集數據,也與人文社會科學院設計調查,以了解使用者的意見,以作進一步改善。」

展望未來,作為科技學院分子電子學小組的主管,華教授期望繼續貢獻都大的研究領域,創造更多跨學科協作,並透過意義深遠的研究為社會帶來更大影響。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
