林群声教授为香港都会大学校长及环境化学讲座教授。

林教授于1979至1984年就读于香港大学,取得学士及硕士学位;并于1984年获英联邦奖学金赴英国深造,在谢菲尔德大学修读博士学位。及后林教授在裘槎基金会资助下,于伦敦大学国王学院从事博士后研究,并于1988年加入香港城市理工学院担任讲师一职。其后,他在多所大学工作,包括香港中文大学 (1990-1992) 和澳洲维多利亚科技大学 (1992-1994)。他在1994年再次回到香港城市大学化学系 (前生物及化学系) 工作。

林教授是香港高等教育界的先驱,在学术发展及大学行政管理方面具丰富经验。加入都大前,林教授为香港城市大学特别项目总监,并身兼胡梁子慧教授 (理学) 及化学系讲座教授。自1994年起,他在城大先后担任其他要职,包括署理副校长 (本科教育)、副校长 (学生事务)、秘书长及海洋污染国家重点实验室主任。

身为环境化学、生态毒理学,以及环境风险评估领域的杰出学者及专家,林教授的学术成就超卓,他在生态学和环境评估的研究成果尤其突出,提升了公众的保护环境意识。他亦开发了一系列新兴污染物的超灵敏检测分析方法;其中,针对关键环境基质中的新兴污染物的痕量分析技术,为协调国际的分析方法作出贡献。其关于新兴污染物的全球分布与环境持久性的研究成果,也影响了世界上很多地方的相关政策与立法。

林教授在国际学术期刊以作者或共同作者的身份发表超过500篇文章,主持超过35项环境相关的政府顾问项目,包括有毒污染物对本港鲸豚和水鸟的风险评估。他先后于2011年、2012年及2019年三度获国家教育部颁发自然科学奖 (二等奖)。

参与公共事务方面,林教授现时担任认可咨询委员会主席、北部都会区咨询委员会委员、创新科技及工业局「杰出创科学人计划」成员、土地共享先导计划─顾问小组成员及司法人员薪俸及服务条件常务委员会委员。他曾任环境咨询委员会主席 (2010-2016),并分别于 2008 年及 2014 年获香港特别行政区政府颁授太平绅士及银紫荆星章。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
