New Council appointments

The University welcomes the new appointments of (from left) Ir Francis Cheng Cho-ying, Managing Director of HK Electric, Dr Eman Liu Yiman, Deputy Director and President of Huashang Education Group, Prof. Frances Wong Kam-yuet, Chair Professor of Advanced Nursing Practice and Associate Dean of Faculty of Health and Social Sciences of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Ir Prof. S C Wong, Chair Professor of Transportation Engineering and Associate Dean of Faculty of Engineering of The University of Hong Kong. The first three members were appointed on 20 June and the last will be on board on 1 October, all for a three-year term.

Moreover, the University would like to express its gratitude to outgoing members Mr Anthony Chan Tung-shan, Prof. Emily Chan Ying-yang, Ms Cecilia Lee Sau-wai and Prof. Tam Kar-yan for their valuable service over the past years.

HKMU Foundation Dinner

On 21 March, the University organised the first HKMU Foundation Dinner under the theme of “Uniting Excellence, Inspiring Future” to express gratitude to its supporters for their generosity, and to rally the community to join hands in promoting the development of HKMU. At the event, Dr Peter Lee, Chairman of HKMU Foundation Advisory Committee and Title Sponsor of the Dinner, was presented with a Chinese calligraphy phrase written by Associate Professor Dr Kelly Chan Kar-yue and crafted by student Tsui Tsz-kiu, in appreciation of his support and contribution to the University. A well-received auction was also held, with the funds raised through which to be used to support the general development of the University, general bursaries and bursary fund for prison inmates.

Gaining insight into the UAS system in Germany

In March, HKMU became the first University of Applied Sciences (UAS) in Hong Kong. Following this, President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing and the then Dean of the Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration, Prof. Alan Au Kai-ming, jointly paid a visit to Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences (HHN) in Germany on 22–23 April in order to learn more about the UAS system in Germany and explore opportunities for overseas collaborations and transnational education projects. During the meeting, HHN’s management shared their experiences from the German International University in Egypt and the Vietnamese-German University in Vietnam. They also gave the delegates a tour of their campuses, facilities and the HHN Career Fair.

Grand opening of Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre

Established last year, the University’s Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre had its grand opening on 21 March, officiated by Dr Ina Ho Chan Un-chan. Precious collections were specially displayed at the Centre to celebrate its opening, including the costumes of Prince Consort Chow Sai-hin and Princess Cheung-ping from the scene “Fragrant Death” in The Flower Princess, the phoenix coronet and headdresses worn by the renowned Cantonese opera actress Chan Ho-kau in her past performances, and a cheque signed by famed actress Fung Wong-lui in 1988. In celebration of the University’s 35th anniversary, the Centre also held the “Connect U-r Voices in Cantonese Opera: Joint-university Cantonese Opera Performance” on 11 May.
