Promoting a healthy journey
in the community

HKMU has been offering nursing programmes since 1994, training over 10,000 nurses and other health professionals to serve society. The School of Nursing and Health Sciences (N&HS) also employs its profound healthcare knowledge and skills to raise public health awareness through various community events.

In March 2024, N&HS organised a Health Expo at Kwun Tong Yue Man Square. About 100 nursing and physiotherapy teachers and students provided health screening services for the general public, including checking of the body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, glucose, hand grip strength, eyesight and macular degeneration, as well as assessment of balance. The expo also featured health talks by guest speakers and teaching staff, covering topics like community health, age-related macular degeneration, cardiovascular diseases contributing to falls among the elderly, and nutrition. There were also physiotherapists leading local residents to do stretching exercises and registered nurses answering health questions from the public.

Moreover, N&HS collaborated with Sai Kung and Tseung Kwan O Women’s Association Limited to hold community health events between December 2023 and March 2024, actively promoting fall prevention across the city. Efforts have included organising a train-the-trainer workshop to equip Care Team volunteers and N&HS students with fundamental knowledge of fall prevention and holding fall prevention talks in various districts. The School has also recruited Care Team volunteers and its staff and students to conduct fall risk assessments for local residents during events and visits, benefiting over 1,000 adults and senior citizens up to the end of July.
