都大获教育局拨款逾3,700万 为新型工业化成立工业中心及发展相关课程

香港都会大学(都大)获教育局「自资专上教育提升及启动补助金计划」(计划)拨款逾3,700万,成立工业中心,推动新型工业化,发展新课程及优化现有课程。都大校长林群声教授相信此项目,能配合政府最新提倡的「新型工业化」施政措施,为行业培育优秀人才。

过去两年,都大均获教育局拨款资助开办全新课程。其中2021/22年度获资助共7,300万,开设建筑管理及工料测量荣誉理学士,以及新音乐及互动娱乐荣誉文学士课程;而2020/21年度则获资助4,000万,开设医疗化验科学(荣誉)理学士学位课程。林校长称:「都大连续三年获政府拨款,反映政府对都大致力提供优质教育,以及开办需求殷切且具特色的课程,予以肯定及支持。」他表示,本年度获拨款的项目有助推进本港「新型工业化」,提升本港竞争力。

都大科技学院现时提供多个工程和信息科技课程,并由合作伙伴及院校提供场地设施以进行工业培训。有见相关课程的培训需求与日俱增,都大将利用拨款成立工业中心,添置符合市场标准的设施,为学生提供优质培训。

都大亦会运用拨款推出全新建筑工程荣誉工学士课程,培训建筑工程师。该课程着重教授智能建筑技术,让学生掌握创新和先进的建筑技术以应用于建筑项目中。

配合新课程的发展,工业中心将配备智能建筑技术设施,为学生提供实践机会,帮助他们掌握先进的智能建筑技术。设施同时有助优化现有的屋宇设备工程及可持续发展荣誉工学士土木工程课程荣誉工学士的培训。

中心同时会设置物联网和Web3设施,有助教授与新工业相关的知识和技能,例如物联网、无线感测网络、网络安全、人工智能和数据分析等;又会建立机械人和自动化设施,配合新工业化对机械人技术方面的需求。这些设施对电子及计算机工程、网络及计算机安全和数据科学及人工智能课程的培训大有帮助。预期工业中心落成后,能为都大及本港其他自资院校的学生提供培训,以满足行业需求。

此外,都大计划建立一个创客空间,为学生提供合适环境,鼓励学生将创新想法转化为原型产品,培养他们解决问题的能力及创业精神。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
